With 17 wickets in four games, including a five-wicket haul against Services on Saturday, Jharkhand pacer Ajay Yadav is having a fairytale debut season. And like most fairytales, it seemed improbable only a couple of months back. At 26-years-old Yadav had fallen off the radar as far as first-class cricket was concerned. He had played U-22 matches five years back before but hadnÃÕ done too well. Å¢fter that I lost touch with the game, recalls the soft spoken Yadav. In the years since he had played local level and inter-district matches but hadnÃÕ made a mark over there either. In his off season, Yadav whose family hails from the backward Godda district of the state, says he would graze his family cattle. Each year however, Yadav would show up at the Ranji camp in Jamshedpur where he would serve as a net bowler. In the past Yadav would bowl for the duration of the camp and leave quietly at its end. This season though was different. The bowler immediately attracted the attention of Tarak Sinha, who after two seasons with Ranji champions Rajasthan had been appointed coach of the Jharkhand team this year. Ÿhat I noticed about him was that he was regularly getting the ball to land on the seam. His wrist position was perfect because of which he was getting movement both in the air and off the wicket. What bowlers take years to perfect he had naturally. He had the ability to bowl long spells, recalls Sinha. With the states pace stocks running low after the injury of Varun Aaron, Sinha says he was more than keen to give the unknown bowler a chance. Å¥eepak Chahar had come up when I was coach of Rajasthan and in Yadav I thought I had discovered another bowler with the same potential, says Sinha. When the camp came to an end, Yadav left as usual. Ū remember I was grazing the cattle when I got the message that I had been called up for the trial matches. It was a big shock to me,ÇÔays Yadav. His new teammates ensured that he felt comfortable playing first-class cricket. Å´hahbaz bhai (Shahbaz Nadeem) gave me a pair of shoes and Tarak sir gave me my first pair of sunglasses, says Yadav. Yadav didnÃÕ perform too well in the trial matches either. Å©e got through by the skin of his teeth, says a JSCA official. Luckily he did all right, he says. Yadav picked up a solitary wicket but went at under two an over. In his next match against Tripura, he picked up a six for in the first innings and had a ten wicket haul match-haul. Brief scores: Services: 185 in 80.1 overs (S Chatterjee 97; A Yadav 5/30, S Nadeem 3/42) vs Jharkhand: 4/0 in 4 overs.

He looks like a good prospect, i have seen nothing of Siddharth Kaul. I don't think there is an anti-Punjab bias. Are you implying that Varun Aaron got selected before he should have done?

I think he is a tall bowler. 6'2 or something around that.
not really tall for a fast bowler, as tall as UV. Munaf and Nehra who are borderline tall for fast bowlers are 6'3"...
