Is Sachin a greater test batsmen or ODI batsmen?

It all comes down to sachin vs Lara vs Kallis in tests. Ponting was good in both formats but like NareshK said ponting had failed in India and had many greats batting with him.

Sachin's ODI record is incomparable. He's the best ODI bat ever. But you can't say the same thing on tests. He's always compared with the likes of Lara and Ponting among the contemporaries and the Don if you look at the past.
Again his ODI record is incomparable in terms of volume of runs, because of the numbers of games played which again is incomparable. That does not make him the best ODI bat ever, there are many who believe that Richards is a better ODI than Tendulkar, which he is.

If someone plays more Tests and innings at a 54 average he is more likely to accumulate more runs' date= than someone who played lesser number of Tests and innings and retired, but averaged in the same range. So volume of runs alone does not necessarily make someone greater than other, unless one is willing to look at the overall numbers.
Time and again cricket world has showed us that it is very difficult to maintain same standards for so many matches and even be part of the team. So, no I don't agree that if someone plays so many matches then he most likely to accumulate runs at same rate. Even best batsmen like Viv and Ponting failed to maintain the rate.

as clarke said before the series "longivity differentiate sachin from others great".that is which sachin is all about, the whole world is stunned because of that ,unbelievable really if you make so much of your talent.

Good question, there is probably only one comparable ODI bat and that is Viv Richards. In tests as has been pointed out several debates are had- rightly or wrongly.

Both of your sentences show disconnect from each other and is rather a fallacy. I agree that volume of runs do not make someone greater than other. However, looking at the "overall numbers" as you want to say his average is just too good. Longevity defines greatness, no player is named great without passing the test of times.

Even Shahid Afridi has a 6 years career but is he termed great? Sachin, for a very large part of his career has been in prime form.

That's what I meant thought wrote it in a little bit of a hurry.

Damn, this is the ultimate moral dilemma for Sachin fans. Double bind situation We know we have to defend Sachin to death over anyone else We also know we have to completely put down anyone who is pitted against Sachin But yahan to dono taraf hi Sachin hai, :nervous: Do we say test Sachin is best and whoever bigs up ODI Sachin is a fool? Or do we insult test Sachin for having the temerity of being compared to ODI Sachin? This is the ultimate dilemma. Test Sachin damn ODI Sachin. No test Sachin sucks, ODI rules. No Test Sachin. No ODI. Too much of Sachin. Does not compute.............Does not compute.......does not comp................. whirrrrr.............blasttttttt

I think Sachin is a better ODI bat than test bat. For the simple reason that in ODIs, there is only one other batsman who merits comparison to Sachin in entire history of ODI cricket- Viv Richards. On the other hand, in tests, there are a few more candidates who are fit to be ranked in the same echelon as Sachin- Lara, Viv, Sobers, Bradman. I personally rank Sachin as the #1 ODI bat of alltime ahead of Viv and #2 Test bat of alltime, behind Bradman.

False logic. The quoted point only proves the lack of ODI greats, not the fact that Sachin's personal ODi performance is greater than his test ones
