I think Alastair Cook will be an English batting legend and maybe ATG when he retires, but he won't ever match the legacy that Sachin left. He is bound to go through a lean patch at a part of his career.

Cook might break Tendulkars test record, but he is not even his teams best batsman ( that is KP). Sachin at his peak was worlds best batsman in Test and ODI at the same time.. Defensive batsmen will always be that defensive..second fiddle to the offensive batsmen.

Tendulkar used to play only 5-6 test matches in his early age (before 2000). That was the time when Sachin was actually in full form but unfortunately due to less number of matches being played those days he could not pile up runs which Cook is doing now (playing 12-14 test matches in a year).

Cook has been on decline for sometime now, I remember his avg being 50+ in 2011. You just can't play 100+ tests in 8 years and expect numbers to turn up, he'd still have to average a good deal on consistent basis. The Pontings, Lara's couldn't do it. I doubt if Cook is even in the same class as them.

In tests Cook has already played better overseas test innings in terms of value for his team than Sachin. Overall it is no even a contest Cook is not even in same ball park as Sachin.

cook is a sitting duck against quality attack (be pace or spin) ,he was terrible in this ashes against some quality aussie pacers

I was actually looking at Cook's stats today and thought the same thing (in Test matches). Kohli could get his ODI records maybe...

Cook can. He has been terrific, but I still believe and maintain that he won't be able to. Only player who could have and he also gave most Indian's something to worry about, was Ricky Ponting. There was a time, he was really really close to levelling his record to Tendulkar before his decline started.

England plays a lot of test matches and Cook is an opener which means he has more scoring opportunities. Time is definitely on his side and unless injuries and captaincy burnout impact him adversely, he has a very good chance of becoming the leader run getter and century maker in tests.

There is no doubt Cook is one of the best batsman england has produced. If you look at his current record he has already surpassed the greatest batsman our 'fast' neighbours have produced. Can Cook break sachin records ? he certainly is making a strong case ; Will he ? time will tell. Just to put things in prospective when Sachin played his 97th test he had scored over 8000 runs, had 29 centuries (basically equalled bradmans record) at an avg of 57 and ofcourse he had 23 test wickets. Sachin however was 29 a year older than Cook. Having said that what truly sets him apart are the over 11k ODI runs along with 31 ODI centuries to go with it.
