I would chose Sachin a heart beat if I am starting a team. What Gambhir and others are forgetting Sachin was the mainstay of Indian batting at 21 and was the focal point of opposition like Lara who also had to lead his team's batting at early age. Kallis , Dravid became focal point only after 2004, same with Ponting he became Aussie go to guy after 2003. Similarly mantle of go to guy which AB is taking over from Kaillis after playing 93 tests where Kohli is takien that mantle very earlier.

Kudos to Gambhir for speaking his mind. The whole package of Kallis is obviously better than Tendulkar. But he was not a better batsman.

He was smart enough to realize it early enough unlike Tendulkar at retire with a higher average. Tendulkar lost 3.5 batting average after the world cup 2011 till his retirement. Kallis was following a similar trend but called it a day at the right time.

Statistically, most of the great players are similar so one can usually make a case for one or the other. What drives general consensus is the stories that the cricketers are able to generate about themselves. So let's look at some of the stories: 1930s-50s ----> Legend of Bradman - from a test batting avg of almost 100, 300 runs scored in a day to Bodyline. Bradman probably got all the stories to his name about batting 1950s-70s ----> Sir Garry Sobers - 365*, 6 6s, 254 against Aus .... When you ask Sobers' peers about him, they usually go :omg: 1970s-90s ----> Again an era that produced a lot of great batsmen - Chappell, Border, Crowe, Miandad, Gooch, etc. to name a few. But Richards and Gavaskar are set apart. There are stories about Richards' swashbuckling innings and Gavaskar's technique, along w/ his success against the WI 1990s-10s ----> Another era where we saw some astonishing batsmen including Tendulkar, Ponting, Kallis, Dravid to again name a few. But it will be Lara whose stories will be shared the most whether it is breaking Sobers record and then going on to get it back by hitting a 400, 500 runs in an inning in FC, the magical 150 odd (iirc), playing with the tail, to pull an unlikely victory against Aus, 277 against Aus, the series against SL, ....

If I had to choose one' date='it would be Kallis no doubt[/quote'] Depends on the team. If you need an all rounder then Kallis is your guy. But if your team already has 4 good bowlers and you have the option selecting someone like Imran, then I would take Sachin or Lara any day over Kallis.
