Has the addition of Amit Mishra changed the outlook of the Indian bowling unit?

This I agree. ALso as Muloghonto is saying above, obviously Kumble and Warne are class apart to Mishra but Kumble was skiddish and quick so had a chance of giving away the odd long hop no matter how much control he had,Shane Warne's magic delivery was the Flipper and a Flipper gone wrong is a rank long hop,Misra's magic ball is his Googly,so his best option is flight ,loop and pitching the ball full,that is where he has been impressive with the control he has shown. So far so good

that was overseas.Mishra still has to prove himself overseas and against teams who play spin well

actually the spinners were milked at home, see the aus series and many series before that. even in the pak 2012 series our part timers and spinners were milked for singles

@ div I think the important thing to look at is the manner in which Mishra has bowled and taken wickets. He has troubled and beaten batsmen almost every over he has bowled. That has a huge impact on the opponent's psyche.

good thing is that this kicks everyone else up the backside.. he may not be the best in the field but he dives for the ball and has got a run out if im right last match. no one can be complacent, everyone needs wickets/low economy >> good for team india

When you give a player a patchy run in the team expect a patchy return. Has to be given consistent run

You need both in limited overs cricket. A wicket-taking option AND a container. Worked brilliantly for many a limited overs attacks. 'containers only, no real attack option' only worked for West Indies of the late 90s/early 2000s when Walsh & Ambrose were 'cointainer mode only' in LOIs and their backups were not good enough strike option. But it worked because both Walsh & Ambrose were in the top 1% of containers, who would routinely end up bowling marathon 6-8 over spells and leave the opposition at 50/1 or 50/0 after 15 overs, requiring them to take too much risks in the middle overs. But we do not have containers of that callibre bowling from both ends, so we need a strike option. Mishra is that in the middle overs.

I prefer a different mix actually, i prefer 2 attacking bowlers and 3 defensive bowlers for Limited overs contests. Too many attacking bowlers can lead to too much run leakage: getting the opposition to 180/6 after 30 overs is still not an ideal scenario. Plus, one attacker amidst 2 containers is usually better bang for your buck than 2 attackers in one container trio.

ultimately it comes down to the relative strengths of your attacking and containing bowlers atm I see: Misha- fully attacking Shami- fully attacking Bhuvi intermediate Jadeja- container Aswhin- cargo ship bare in mind though that Jadeja just came in to contain today and proved our most expensive bowler.

We didn't realize this option before, but Ojha could have done the same job at his peak when he was dropped from the team for no reason. He could have been as handy as Mishra if not more. mishra is another example of how good talent is held down in india to promote complacency.. mishra, rahane, shami, now ishwar, yadav, bhuvi (tests), manoj tiwary, pujara - countless others! i bet our bowling would be better if ishwar was given a go, if yadav was played. pankaj singh is held down. manoj tiwary is a better player than rohit anyday, atleast he can rotate strike and get 4s. sickening, we could be so much better.

mishra bowls well in the ipl too.... so he surely is a good t20 option..... he has not been dangerous in the limited number of test matches that he has played imo..... in this tourney so far the difference has been our bowling unit clicking en masse.... we don't have lambu and vk types leaking 13 - 14 rpo.... everyone is creating pressure with tight bowling and our fielders are releasing the pressure for a change by dropping 3-4 catches in each match.... plus bowling first definitely helps!

Ojha doesn't even have a good arm ball and doesn't turn the ball much. Mishra completely bamboozled batsmen with his variations yesterday. When you can turn your leg break that much, his googly, flipper became even more effective.

Why we don't try to promote more leg/ wrist spinners is a mystery to me. They are the ones who generally get turn on most surfaces, if they have turning ability. They can bowl the delivery that goes the other way... googly in their case, more easily and without chucking and get sharper turn. They generally have more variety too. Thankfully a few new ones are coming up and Mishra has rediscovered himself.
