I hope this moron ends up with 350 wickets and 5000 runs in test cricket. he is innocuous (or to be generous, "less dangerous"), but more effective than kapil dev as a test allrounder. kapil dev is a better batsman, but ashwin puts a price on his wicket. that makes him a effective allrounder (an allrounder who recognizes/identifies himself as one and consciously makes an effort to contribute with both bat and ball unlike Irfan PAthan) . I wish ashwin played in 80s and kapil dev now. any limited overs team which has kapil dev is just deadly. when he retires, there is good chance of him being the greatest test allrounder in Indian conditions.

Irfan Pathan just did not get into his head that, if his bowling form dips - his batting form will save him and vice versa. moron just kept parroting that he is a bowler and nothing more.

Bowled well yesterday, but one interesting thing I have noticed about him is that he always seems to do well against SC teams like Pak and SL and is poor against non-SC teams.

He needs to get more tips from our past legends of spin like Bedi, Prasanna, Doshi, Kumble et al and make himself more potent, especially outside India. Bowling is always a catching up game, batsmen are always working you out, and if you don't improve you will regress. Spin bowling is a thankless job in modern cricket that heavily favours the batsman. I am pretty sure, he will be India's best modern all rounder in tests, finishing with 5000 runs and 400 wickets.

Any day better than that chucker Harbhajan Singh. Hope he gets a county stint, will do wonders to his bowling. He is the modern day Vinod Mankad.

Outside Asia, that's what is needed to get results and now he is doing that. In the past, he would pitch the ball around the off or middle stump. But now he isn't doing that. We have to see how effective will that be when the pitch doesn't turn much.

Smaller grounds and bigger bats have made the spinners very uncomfortable while flighting the ball. If mishits take the ball past the ropes, the flight becomes useless. More and more spinners are darting the ball because of this. ICC has to do something to bring back the balance between bat and ball. Bigger grounds will surely allow good spinners to flight the ball slowly.

I don't quite agree. In the end, he will likely become a better bowler statistically than Mankad, but the latter played in a s**t team with no bowling support for the most part and had lots of catches dropped against him. I reckon that Mankad and Ashwin, in terms of ability, must be quite close in bowling terms. Batting wise, there's not much of a comparison. Poor Vinoo was shunted in the order quite a bit, but he averaged 41 as an opener, which was very good, even excellent in that era. Mankad was a very good batsman, much better than Ashwin, although stats again don't reveal the whole story.

Good bowler, not yet great. Greatness can only come with time and sustainability. Only 134 test wickets so far, so we can write about him after another 2-3 years to see if he sustains the ability like a Kumble, that sustaining ability is the key differentiator (and the other trait to learn from Kumble is the ability to fight even when the odds are stacked against).
