But she would not like to be one of those who pull strings from the backseat. She wants to pull strings directly. That is her driving force. I don't question the support she still has. But will she get a chance? People were fed up with MK and his family. Rightly so. So the timing was perfect for her even to think about being a PM let alone CM. But they clamped her down. This is a big blow to such ambitions. Let us see how the events unfold.

The Supreme Court had in July 2013 struck down Section 8(4) of the Representation of the People Act' date= 1951, which protected convicted MPs and MLAs from disqualification if they appeal before a higher court within three months. -
The difference is that she is immediately disqualified from being an MLA The old law already banned anyone who got at least 2 year sentence from contesting in elections

Reading the possibilities. she cannot come to power unless she could get the verdict to be changed which is unlikely. Not sure on what grounds she can prove it wrong. She tried as far as she could.

However, since the High Court was on vacation, the application may be taken up by a vacation bench on Tuesday. Her lawyers held a marathon meeting here on Sunday preparing the grounds of appeal against the trial court order which disqualified Ms Jayalalithaa as an MLA and cost her the position of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. The legal team discussed options to get the sentence suspended and the conviction stayed, party sources said. According to sources, senior Supreme Court advocate Ram Jethmalani is likely to join the defence team. Meanwhile, an advocate in the prosecution team said the State would oppose applications seeking stay on the sentence and conviction. “When a bail application is made, the High Court will order notices to the State. If they move an application seeking stay on conviction, the State will oppose it,” he said on condition of anonymity. Legal experts say a stay on the conviction is deemed necessary to get her disqualification suspended. While the Supreme Court has said in many cases that the appellate court has the power to suspend both the sentence and conviction, it laid down in 2001 that when a public servant has been convicted for corruption, the conviction should not be stayed during the pendency of an appeal.

Left the lawyer shanmuga sundaram dying .. so much atrocities happened under he regime. Those who remember the 90s knows about her atrocities.
Most of the public have forgotten/totally unaware of JJ's misdeeds. Only those who followed politics actively during 1991-96 remember these. As a result, she is getting a lot of sympathy, which she doesn't deserve a bit.

On the one hand, it is absolutely wonderful to see that there's enough teeth in the Indian judicial system to send a sitting Chief Minister, that too one considered at point in time to be potential PM material to Jail! This is fan-bleeding-tastic! On the other hand, I am actually sad that JJ's current tenure as CM of TN has been derailed by this. I have made this point before - She was absolutely HORRIBLE during her first tenure as CM b/w 91-96. But she was also extremely green then and mostly manipulated by older heads in ADMK. Her subsequent stings as CM of TN have been materially better. So it is kinda unfortunate to see her current term derailed by something she did nearly 20 years ago.

This punishment sets a precedence. An incumbent CM getting kicked out due to corruption albeit done years ago. Because they didn't punish her following government continued this charade without shred of fear. We have to start somewhere. We need a third party to rise in TN besides these two Dravidian parties.

CHENNAI: At least 16 people committed suicide or died of cardiac arrest across Tamil Nadu after a special court in Bangalore convicted AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa in the 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case on Saturday and sentenced her to four years in prison. Two people have been hospitalized with severe burns. Police said three people hanged themselves, one AIADMK supporter committed suicide by self-immolation, one person ended his life by jumping in front of a bus and one person died after consuming poison after the court pronounced its verdict. Ten others died of cardiac arrest, apparently due to shock after Jayalalithaa's conviction, a police officer said.
