goose Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I am loving fifty over cricket at the moment. The format has become a beautiful blend of test cricket and T20. On the batting side you need modern day hitters to make hay in the final 15 overs where 10 an over has become par and 15 an over is not unheard of. But you need to get to the 35th over with batsmen to come to take advantage. Fail and you're reduced to 3-4 run per over which is pretty much how it's always been at the death with the tail-enders. It's essentially your test match skills on show for the first 35 overs. Teams are packing their sides with proper batsmen and wicket takers i.e. basically the test side - this is quite a change even from 2 years ago. In this tournament we have seen 22 games where the team batting second has lost. The average margin of defeat in those games....a whopping 110 runs! This is no surprise. Test matches are rarely won by a few runs, more often anywhere between 50 and 200 runs. Containment is not the valuable skill it once was for a bowler. This has implications for the the mediocre all-rounder. I think we can say good goodbye to close fifty over cricket in the traditional sense. There will be passages of play that intrigue but if you're tuning in at the 45th over for a tight finish you might be disappointed. Personally, I'm loving the new challenges the format is posing. For those that like a flutter, find a bookmaker offering spreads in margins of victory and go higher before they all catch on! I also think India will win this WC for all the above reasons.

A few pundits are pointing to the 'one-sided' results between full member sides to pour scorn over ICC decision to keep the Associates out. They are missing the point. Wicket taking performances are merely highlighting the huge swings in run rate potential. You want to see a close game in the traditional sense...watch Ireland versus Zim.

Just have more fielders outside the circle, one bowler can bowl extended spell, and make the boundaries longer in some stadiums. things will get much better
Cricketics Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I love 50 overs. You just look at the bowling option the captain has. Just the idea about putting pressure on opposition by bring your best bowler back and forth during certain stages of the game, than shining the ball to keep it swinging in the first few overs, to building the innings in mid overs so that the team can try to reach decent score by the 50 over, makes the game really competitive. Test cricket is my favorite, but 50 over cricket is the best leveler of the game among all the test playing nations.

This is a different issue. I hate how commonplace boundaries have become - large scores are merely the symptom. I agree, if we could tilt the balance in favour of the bowler then the format could be truly amazing. My original point is to do with the inflation in MARGIN of victory/defeat which is entirely expected.

kubrickian Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Agree. With 50 overs, the game is still long enough to test the teams and ensure the better team wins. There is enough time for players to showcase their technique, skill and temperament while still making it entertaining and thrilling. T20 is too much of a lottery where bowlers are reduced to machines. Test cricket is best but its too long and not everyone can watch it realistically and will never get popular beyond a niche audience in some select countries.

express bowling Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I love the 50 over format. Especially when the pitch is reasonably sporting. It gives a good mix of innings building as well as strokeplay. The bowlers can have reasonably long spells and set up batsmen. But the pacers can bowl with full effort too as there are only 10 overs to bowl. T20s are too short for innings building or setting up batsmen.

There were times before when I would just skip from over 15-35 or something or go for long breaks. But not recently. It's definitely been fun.

It could further improved by discarding the Two new balls rule which has effectively eliminated Reverse Swing from the ODI format. One of the major reasons we're loving this WC is the performance of our fast bowlers and how well they've utilized the pace and bounce on offer. But this is going to be short-lived as the pacers will get no assistance whatsoever when they return to our home grounds and most ODIs will expectedly turn into run-fests. The best way to rectify this is to bring back Reverse Swing into this format by getting rid of the Two new balls rule. There's no better sight in cricket than an inswinging yorker crashing into the stumps!
