The making of India spearhead Mohammed Shami

Good to see shami back in form. It helps that he is getting support from others and it put less pressure in him. In QF he did not start well so dhoni could get mohit to bowl tight and he came back later to take wickets. Previously him and bhuvi would have to bowl first 10 even when getting hit

He has somehow survived 46 ODI games' date='which is unusual for an Indian pacer.Just needs to be more consistent in tests.[/quote'] 46 games is not a lot. Most of our pacers who faded out played roughly the same no. of games - Munna, Irfan, Sreesanth, RP, Ishant, etc.

They were good prospects and bowled a few good spells here and there. Munaf Patel used to have pace in FC but was already batting injuries and had slowed down by the time he was selected. Irfan, Sreesanth, RP were primarily swing bowlers in 130-135 range and they were not consistent either. Shami is the best seamer India has produced in a long time. Umesh is also improving. Both are among the best seamers in this World Cup in terms of average and strike rate.

After Srinath...Aaron, Umesh and Shami have natural pace among Indian pacers. Even during their slower days, these bowlers bowl at a lively pace. So, I am hopeful that this lot will fare better as they become more experienced and accurate.

Sreesant and Munaf were the best pacers we produced in last 10 years talent wise. Both were quick hitting 140Ks or more. Sreesanth had one of the best outswingers the game has seen. Munaf had a great bouncer and was good with the old ball too. His first two test series were good then he slowed down after he got injuries and tried to become McGrath and wasnt the same bowler. Sreesanth was mental midget.

thats what I fear from these guys too. umesh and shami are too much of "nice"guys without overt aggression. they don't need to be crazy like munaf and sreesanth. aaron has a bit more of aggression which can be channeled

But Sreesanth was never a good One day bowler. Both Shami and Yadav have proven they can be quality one day bowlers which is rare for us

I'm excited of our pace bowlers Umesh, Aaron and Shami. With some more backing, they can form a formidable bowling unit. This was never the case in the past. We had bowlers like Zaheer, Nehra, Munaf etc. but these bowlers weren't as quick as the ones we have got now. Munaf was nothing more than a medium pacer for a majority of his international career. Even his run up was disgraceful and was more like a part timer. Nehra was good arbitrarily (best in 2003 WC). Sreesanth had a decent seam position but he din't excite me the way Umesh/Aaron/Shami do. I hope the selectors persist with them both in tests and ODIs. I agree, Umesh and Shami need to be more aggressive with their bowling. Sometimes when Umesh is attacked, he loses it which has to change. Aaron on the other hand should learn to channel his aggression well. Gets too attacking at times. :cantstop:

this is so true,we have lost so many genuine talent due to favoritism and one of my friend was also a victim of favoritism.you need massive luck and talent to climb up the ladder step by step

munaf hardly bowled 140 ' date=' sreesanth did till he had some back problems in 2008[/quote'] Munaf was kind of laid back. He didnt hit 140 all the time, but he did 145K whenever he wanted. He was like Steyn in that regard when he first came. Changing the gear when needed and would bowl according to the situation.

steyn has played a lot so he has slowed down it is a wrong comparison ' date='on odd occasions even vinay kumar, bk even rishi dhawan i think have hit 140 there is nothing special about it[/quote'] No. Steyn has not slowed down. Steyn has aleays been like. He never bowled 140 plus consistently in test cricket. His average speed has always been about 85 mph and that is the reason he has not gotten as many injuries as the likes of Lee got who would bowl as quick as he could every over. Steyn does not do that. He will look for swing, line and length and then once ball gets old will change the gear and increase his pace when there is a partnership going on. Munaf was similar. Munaf quick quick whenever he wanted. Could click 145K. Dont compare VK, BK, Dhawan to Munaf. Dhawan hss never done it. BK has done it in one game in IPL. Vk has done in one t20 game in Aus. If you had watched his debut test and his FC matches before, you would understand. Munaf used to do it in every game in his early years before he got tat Mcgrath syndrome. He had picked a 10-fer in warmup against England before his debut and that game was live and he was consistently around 140 and he was tall used to get bounce. He troubled Collingwood in his first test with bouncers and reversing Yorkers bowlng 140-145K. That was the best bowling I had seen from an Indian fast bowler in a long time.

i am surprised with your analysis of munaf ' date='i saw him right through his carrier including that tour match vs eng ,his 140 ks would not be more than a handful of balls , that that too ended after the 2006 wi tour ,but i agree with your opinion on steyn ,and dhawan did hit 140 in 2013 ipl he was bowling a lot quicker then .[/quote'] As I said Munaf would not bowl 140 or more all the time because he was injury prone. He would conserve himself and could bowl quick when needed especially with old ball when it is reversing. It is not like he could not bowl quick but he was vary of injuries. He already had career threatening shoulder injury before his test debut in 2004 while playing for India A during fielding and he had to undergo a shoulder reconstruction after that.
