sage Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Is he a World ATG? Is he an Indian ATG? I think so. The fact that he averaged 50 with such a great strike rate at the top of the order is world class stuff. I personally think he's looked over and underrated in all-time XI discussions.
Muloghonto Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 I think Sehwag actually makes a very good case for an ATG opener. IMO, his overseas record is much maligned but is a statistical oddity: he is obviously not full ATG level on bouncy & seamy wickets but he isn't actually much worse than other candidates either. He does have credible overseas record in Australia & West Indies. His record in England was not too shabby before 2011, where he played 2 terrible tests, being rushed back early from a shoulder injury. In South Africa, he's failed at opening, that cannot be disputed but most great openers do have a failure somewhere too. In NZ his record is woeful but seriously, there was that one series where anyone scoring 100 runs in 6 innings was a near miracle, scores were all 150-250 all outs all over the place for both the teams too. IMO, Sehwag is an ATG opener because in home conditions, he is A++ and in his weak condition, be is a B/B- player.

goose Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Once your name is mentioned in ATG global sides (and Sehwag's certainly was alongside Gavaskar i recall) you deserve to retain that status regardless of slumps and/or tailing off in career.

He has a test average of 49.3 at a scoring rate of 82...after playing 104 tests...8500+ runs, 23 centuries, 6 double and 2 triple centuries. Huh....players have been called ATGs for much less. He has centuries in Australia, South Africa and England. Perhaps WI too. Playing at a 82 SR in tests and still averaging 49+....wow.. The most fearless ( from a getting out point of view ) successful Indian batsman I have seen. Whenever he played well he ran away with the game and was an impact player.

Muloghonto Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Sewage does have a few x-factors to boost his case: 1. Astronomical strike rate at the top of the order. That cannot be overstated because not only is the highest strike rate guy for anyone who's scored any chunks of runs (say 40+ average through history), he is around 15-20 clear of the next best top order guy ever! Blasters in tests who've done really well, for e.g. Viv, Lara, Tendulkar in his youth, Ponting, generally were dominating attacks by going at 60-65 overall clip and their 'successful innings' having 70-75 strike rates. Veeru went at 80-85 range and his successful innings went at 90-110 strike rates. That is phenomenal. In tests the rammifications of run rates are less than in ODI cricket but when this level of phenomenal run rate is introduced (i.e., A Veeru 150 in 150 balls as opposed to a Lara 150 in 200 balls would give eight more overs in the game- all of a sudden, there is almost an hour extra to bowl the other guys out/account for weather/let fellow batsmen bat longer etc. connotations to it that cannot be overlooked. 2. He was a middle order bat! Batting in tests is of really three nature: openers, middle orders & tail enders. In tests, middle order bats generally do not adapt well to opening or being exposed to the new ball too soon very often.

Now that Dhoni is gone and lots of matches in subcontinent in the next year or so, is there a case for him to bat in middle order in tests, which he wanted to do after Tendulkar retired? His recent First class scores since Dec 2014 -Feb 2015. Seems to be in decent form. 1. 49,19-Feb 2015 2. 21, 41 3. 66- Jan 2015 4. 39 5. 147, 8-Jan 2015 6. 105-Dec 2014 7. 64-Dec 2014 8. 9.

The thing that stood up was he could never get pressure to get to him.In india to play that style of cricket with all the scrutiny is remarkable.

Truly top class opener/player and was largely instrumental in India winning some epic contests and attaining that coveted #1 test team status.

sensible-indian Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Greatest batsman of all time in SC. Had decent outside SC records for half of his career before things went downhill. Maybe.....borderline ATG (for what all he has done) but can't be called a proper ATG.
