Still there is something about test matches in England, South Africa, Australia which feels worth watching. Perhaps its because the pitches have pace and bounce and lateral movement and fast bowlers get help, the batsmen get tested but they can also attack once set because bounce is usually true. It just seems like an aggressive, attacking brand of cricket to me. Tests in Sub continent generally tend to be snooze fests IMO.

This annoys us northerners. We feel we have more in common with the working class people of an Asian background than the upper-middle class southerners who mostly play the game in this country, and cricket up here revolves around the local leagues and clubs rather than private schools. It's partly the reason why we in Yorkshire feel little affinity with the England team, even when they pick a few Yorkies. As for Sky, I love the coverage, but can only afford to have it during the English summer. As much as I'd like to watch their winter cricket coverage too, I just can't afford it and cancel it for the winter months

G_B_ Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Yes but Sky has also improved the quality and the money clearly has helped ECB .English players r the best paid in international cricket and counties depend on hand outs from ECB to avoid going bankrupt . Also I remember reading in the past when Cricket was with BBC they would regularly cut the telecast for stuff like horse racing etc .Whereas Sky is giving dedicated channels for Ashes and telecasting even domestic matches regularly. .Maybe ECB needs to ensure at least some sort cricket is available free to air may be the NatWest blast and world cup like football has with FA cup and World cup .Its really amazing cricket is the National sport yet no live cricket is part of the 'Crown Jewels' .Perhaps England govt should be blamed instead of Sky or ECB? .I doubt England will have any free to air football otherwise. I will agree the BBC always had problems with cricket due to the length. The dreaded shipping forecast.....However the channel 4 coverage IMO was awesome!!!! This was the 2005 ashes. It was fantastic. Its also not fair IMO to compare now to then. This is digital Britain and the BBC now has BBC3 and BBC4, Channel 4 has many more channels ranging from More 4 etc. Ie there are spare channels for the test coverage to be moved to. During the olympics i do believe the BBC had 24 screens operating simultaneously. I feel there is a middle ground. Now in my case, i guess i can afford the Tv package. But there needs to be enough shown on TV say a test match at Lords every year. You cannot have no cricket on free to air TV. If Rugby and Football can have some coverage then cricket certainly can have. The problem is that England has too many counties. 18 is too much. So the money rather than paying English cricketers ends up propping up a financial burden in terms of the counties. In honesty that number should be cut down to 12. ECB will automatically save something to the tune of £20-£25 million a year. Football yes Rugby no. Rugby school where the game originated is one of the more elite schools in the country. It maybe the game of the masses in Wales, but it is very much a middle class and above sport in the rest of the country. As i said before i feel the Aussie system is the best. 6 teams (low income support needed) and free to air television. For a country which is 3 times the population the Aussie approach will most certainly work.

To make it worse Simon Jones get injured while Fielding ruled out of the test (and series ) .Meant England a bowler short and ended up bowling on a highway .Aussies ended the day at 350 /2 and hammered England . They are milking it to maximum extent to satisfy the broadcasters and one day it will loose it charm, it was once every four years in each country, now looks it is either India playing with these teams or it is Ashes and all of them have been non competitive.

Look at it from another way bro. Cricket = Upper class sport in UK = Makes perfect sense for premium pricing But..... 1. This comes at the cost of cricket NEVER getting a chance to be popular in lower and middle class. 2. Add to that the popularity of Football which would eat up into cricket's base. 3. Also we can't assume future generations of upper class will like an elite sport like cricket the same way like their parents. So the support from an already elite audience COULD decline 20 years down the line, things could be grave in UK if cricket is not made popular.
