Gollum Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 1st time in Lanka, 1st test, 1st day and he ends up with 6/46. Guy is a destined to end up as an ATG. Undoubtedly our MVP because of his all round abilities. This year I am seeing a very different Ashwin, the present version will do well even outside the SC(case in point being the WC where he delivered one of the greatest performances by any spinner in any WC event, pity that wasn't enough to win us the Cup). Monster stats in tests, beast in ICC tourneys, VVS like batting, great cricketing intelligence, pretty good in LOIs...he has it all. Sorry Kohli, but the best out of this lot has to be Ashwin, my first pick in any format at present, more so in tests. Wish he were the captain, feel like India has missed out on a big opportunity. The way he is running through sides in Asian conditions reminds me of peak Murali, long may it continue. Certainly has it in him to end up as one of the game's stalwarts. In fact I would go so far as to say that he has the ability to surpass even Kapil as our greatest all rounder.

Ashwin has improved by leaps and bounds even outside SC, those who watched those Aus tests played on phattas can testify but MSD didn't use him well and there was little support from the other end. We all saw how splendid he was in the WC.

The next Eng tour will really tell - Rahane's form fell off quite a bit after Lords; I think he averaged around 33 with the bat which is quite poor for a top-order bat. I mean, compared to Clarke and the other jokers, it's far better but it ought to have been around 40+
Gollum Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 Remove Ashwin from our test team and we will fall below WI. Remove him from our ODI/T20 setup and we will never come close to qualifying for the semis of ICC tourneys with this batch of cricketers. That's how vital he is.

Ashwin still needs to do well outside SC, and he's not the finished article. I'd agree that Rahane is more complete at the moment, although I wish him to get even better with experience.

But Ashwin is a really important player especially considering that the rest of India's bowling line up is not one that can run through batsman even in the SC. Ashwin has a phenomenal record in the SC (as good as Yasir Shah) and looks improved outside as well.

If all 3 formats are taken together, Kohli would have to be the one since he's a good Test bat (needs to improve against swing), an outstanding ODI bat (despite his poor run of recent form) and statistically the finest T20 bat in the world (46+ avg at a good SR). Regd Yasir Shah, Ashwin's record in Asia is as follows (includes this match): Bat avg: 43.5, Bowl avg: 22.95 (6.24 wkts per match) This is just otherworldly! In the SC, he is, by par, the MVP in Tests.

In overseas he is just a little more than a good utility player...miles better than jadeja or binny because he is a better bowler and marginally better bat than binny in those conditions. He has been lackluster to say the least. In odis he is not a good bat and more containing than attacking. In sc he has been real good though.

He is a constantly evolving spinner. You have to say, Dhoni did play a part . He primarily used him as a bowler who can hold an end up with some defensive field set. Also not every spinner can immediately adjust to different types of balls especially Kookaburra balls. WIll take a while. Part of the blame can be attached to his own tendency towards experimenting too much. He is a spinner with few flaws like every other spinner. All said and done, he is a match winner.

cricketpitch Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 A finger spinner cannot win you games on all wickets. Mostly when they travel overseas on wickets which have something for the pacers, the spinner acts as someone who keeps one end tight and pick up 1 or 2 wickets if possible in the process. A wrist spinner is more effective on all types of wickets. You want a finger spinner to win you games if they get a wicket which is like this one in SL or the one like Adelaide in Australia. Unfortunately India failed to capitalize on the same and played Karn over Ashwin there. The rest of the pitches were flat and you can see how Nathan Lyon also struggled on those wickets. Ashwin did well in England in the last two tests but again those were wickets favoring pacers and Indian batsmen were getting bowled out for less than 150. He has played 9 tests overseas 6 of them in Australia. He needs time to improve as a bowler overseas. He is bowling beautifully at the moment and has improved leaps and bounds. Give him some time and he will become the bowler we want him to be. We cannot compare Ashwin to Yasir as they are two completely different type of bowlers. Leg Spinners are always more effective on all kind of wickets than an off spinner.
