How many of you agree.....Viajy has toured pretty much every single country and performed reasonably well. I think he is one of the best opener currently and best opener for india after sunil and sehwag

I agree completely. Vijay has been an all round test batsman in the last 2 years...both home and away...against pace or spin....often batted well when the chips are down.

 Vijay is the best opener we have, no doubt  . he has proven himself in SA and Aus. 

I thought he would be a failure in SA , but he proved a lot of people wrong.  He deserves a place in ODI for his commitment instead of Rahane.

gambir had an excellent 2010-2011 series in SA. conditions were more difficult in 2010 than in 2013.

Morne and Steyn were unplayable in the late 2010 tour.

For now, I'd say its either GG or MV, with GG slightly ahead of MV. After 2-3 more years, we can revisit to see if MV overtakes GG or about the same.

If we check the stats that I have posted above, both MV and GG have similar stats overall as well as in overseas tests. Both can play on turning tracks as well.

Both have played crucial knocks when the chips are down.

Gambhir was a very good batsman too...sadly lost his form after the tumble he took while taking a catch and hitting his head on the ground.

Vijay at the rate he is going will surpass all but Gavaskar.

No one can touch Sehwag in Asia but Vijay can beat him in impact in all countries. 

Let's see.

Even when he averaged 29 in SA tour, it was very impactful due to him taking the shine off the ball. Its all about correction of records for him which I can see happening. Just hope he doesn't suddenly start regressing.

Vijay hasn't been a spectacular star but he has been the silent guardian of our batting for a while.

By the way, anyone noticed that Vijay has been averaging 63 in this series?

Forget about stats.. In the modern era where batting is polluted by abridged version, tamasha cricket he sticks to old fashion cricket that even 1940s cricketers would be proud of. Kudos to him. Sidhu ? seriously lol That guy was pwned like nobody by ANgus fraser in England so much so he gave some excuse and left. Sidhu is very good against raw pace. But when ball bounces a bit and swings he is just bad. He is good against spin too. But Murali's leaving outside the off stump, Sidhu is no match. Never seen Merchant.. so can't comment.

Vijay is the best Indian opener after Gavaskar, although not the one who is in the team right now.

Many players (like Barry Richards) are rated highly despite playing little international cricket because of WSC, first class records, the opinions of people who saw him etc. Most who saw Merchant rate him extremely highly as well.

It is possible that if Merchant or Barry Richards had played 70+ tests against diverse oppositions, they would have been very good. It is also possible that they could have had some problems and would not be as successful. We will never really know.

In the early 1990s many people thought that Sanjay Manjrekar would have a more successful career than Sachin Tendulkar by the time their respective careers end. This happened after Manjrekar scored a century in the West Indies and a double century in Pakistan...but we all know what happened 20 years later. Graeme Hick was hailed by many as the best batsman to ever play cricket till he actually played a few test matches. Rohit Sharma is thought to be one of the best batting talents now and highly rated by many experts. But, he has disappointed in test matches for quite some time. Vinod Kambli is another such case. I could go on....

To have a longish and very successful career, talent is not the sole contributing factor. Hunger for success, determination to stay at the top for a number of years, ability to accept one's weaknesses and working hard to rectify them, mental toughness, fitness level and staying injury free or succeeding despite injuries, not having a glaring weakness against a particular type of delivery, not getting distracted by success, having the ability to play in diverse conditions against diverse oppositions etc. all contribute in a large way.

I am not in favour of comparing players having long successful international careers with players who showed promise during a short international career and FC ....for the reasons enumerated above. They may or may not have succeeded in a big way if they got the chance to play for a long time against diverse oppositions. We will never know.
