To meet the government's quota laws, South Africa can have only four white players in their starting XI!

this is likely to impact SA cricket significantly. In the short term we will see some of the players retiring earlier than usual. some other promising players like dekock will be always under pressure to perform well. if he has a couple of bad series he will be dropped easily.

some of the upcoming cricketers may think about going to england etc. opportunity for likes of netherlands which can poach players. Eng and now NZ are benefiting already.

if this starts impacting SA national level results they may have to think about reconsidering the quotas for national team

^ Results are the last thing when quotas are considered for national sports teams.

yes but you need good results to inspire the youth. a world cup win would inspire all SA kids esp black kids who were never into it much.

there has to be a balance i feel- cannot sacrifice near term results to such an extent for the long term goals

What you are talking is ideal but quotas are no longer done on idealistic basis...this is more like statistical process.

They can afford it by fielding Colour players against Pakistan Bangladesh Zimbabwe Srilanka in bilateral series and put best players in ICC tourneys and IPL

What about players like Duminy etc. Are they a part of the white quota?

Is there a further sub quota for Afrikaans speaking whites and English speaking whites?

They are wanting more representation from players of color in the team. Duminy, Amla both qualify as that.

Our politicians can do it any time.

Caste,minority quota .

Honestly, I'd prefer if something like that happened. With cricket, at least this issue would get more visibility. Today reservations are so blatantly misused by the creamy layer within these groups. And nobody gives a $hit about it.

Make no mistake that I am not anti reservation. I would prefer reservations based on economic status rather than caste or religion.

Economic status based reservations are a pipe dream in our country. Everyone hides their income. No one is going to honestly agree to declare to the government what they earn. Unless the Income Tax department is able to assess better and has more sweeping investigatory powers, this is not happening.

The concept of reservation is a very complex matter.First it was to be used for only 20 years. But now It has become a very political issue.

We already  have a couple of places in the team reserved for players who don't deserve to be there. Nepotism quota.

Raina, Jadeja, Binny etc. have in some games benefited from that quota when they had no business playing in those games due to their form/ match conditions etc.
