There is actually little difference between their test stats:

Pappu

21 games, Average 33

Sharma

21 games, Average 37

Considering Patel is a WK and has not played for years that is not bad. It also highlights the ineptness of the soon to be 30 Sharma.

Actually Pappu's knocks are more subtantive.

Remind me again....when did Parthiv win a man of the series in a test series or has taken wickets overseas or has gone a full test match without dropping a single catch and catching everything in sight

Hey Parthiv's keeping should keep him out of the side . I don't disagree with. I am just comparing the usefulness of each to the side. There is not whole lot of difference.

We have played Dinesh Karthik as an specialist bat in the past, heck even Saha debuted as a specialist bat (due to lack of options).  If Parthiv plays at Mumbai and scores a 100, why shouldn't he be considered.

They wont be competing for the same spot......

It should be -

Rohit vs Nair vs Pandya/jayant for No.6

Parthiv vs Saha vs Rishabh

Saha vs Rishabh-debatable-Best keeper available(however his overall skills may be) vs an exciting prodigy

Rohit vs Nair-No brainer-Rohit

Rohit vs Pandya/Jayant-again should this be even debated-Rohit all the way

How often is it up for debate to drop a guy who just averaged 80.00 in his last series with the bat and was the 2nd highest 6 hitter in that series?

1. Wk debate- Things change damn fast, if patel scores in remaning test heavily well Saha chances of coming back will diminish. Patel keeping might also get better as his confidence grows . He also gives a left hander batsman who can play spin well. He has chance but again he has to make it count. Pant would get his chances and he has to make most of it. Or else Stop gap arrangements wont ever end.

2. Rohit vs Nair- Again things can change damn quick.

3. Rohit vs Jayant n panyda- It all depends what team wants a cushion of Extra bowler or batsman. With jayant doing so well with bat it wont be wrong to say he has sealed his spot atleast in India. And Overseas well Knowing kohli he wud really want 5 bowlers, specially when none of ur top order bowls much. Only Hooda n Nair can bowl a bit  when it comes to next line of batsman and that also wont be enough. Again 80 % of time an all rounder would play.

Rohit indeed is a "no-brain"er. Amazing lack of brain when he bats in Tests (or even when tuk-tuk-tuk and then get out in ODIs)

5 bowlers overseas especially  Eng,Nzl,Aus and SA is suicidal especially given that our keeper too is not great shakes as a batsman.

On Minefields and grassy or bouncy tracks 4 bowlers are more than enough....Go through history,it is the batsmen who lose games,4 good bowlers are good enough to pick 20 wickets. say in SA with Steyn/Rabada/Philander are on fire we lose say 4 wickets for 30 odd....would you see 2 front line No 5 and No 6 or would you rather see Ahswhi,Pandya,Yadav,Jadeja,Binny type players in that situation?

5 bowler combo is working right now because Ashwin,Jadeja,Yadav are more than capable with the bat in SC.

This is not just about Rohit Sharma but any batsman either him or someone in place of him. just my theory in general that overseas 6+1+4 combo works the best with one of your batsmen getting in some overs.

i feel we have a very decent team for overseas conditions now. shami-bhuvi-umesh-ishanth are not genius level players but capable enough to induce edges in pace friendly conditions.

my only problem is if our slips will take all the straightforward catches (forget converting half chances into catches, iam not even expecting that). i feel very bad when jaddu, vj, kohli, rahane are spilling catches which fall like buttery laddoos out of their hands.

rahane acts like such a bada$$ every time he takes a catch off a spinner, i want to see him do that against pace bowlers.

-----

sorry but rohit sharma doesnt deserve to be in the test team because he has too many technical deficiencies, which should have been corrected by early 20s at the latest. now its too late.

iam only holding back my complaints against rohit, because of too much unreasonable hatred from some of our icf'ers against rohit

he is not that useless.. lol... i agree that we can try out some better options though... and kohli is doing exactly that.

We won't go for 5 specialist bowlers.

2 of them would be all-rounders.

Out of Asia, it might be a good idea to play Parthiv...as his keeping is bad against spin but decent against pace bowling....and he is a good batsman against pace and bounce.

1. Vijay

2. Parthiv

3. Pujara

4. Kohli

5. Rahane

6. Rahul

7. Ashwin

8. Hardik

9. Bhuvi

10. Ishant

11. Shami

This line-up would give good batting depth....up to 9 can bat...a solid batsman in Rahul at No.6.....also give 4 pacers+1 spinner....genuine pace in Shami, Ishant and Hardik,,,swing bowler in Bhuvi

Stereotypically, picking 20 wickets have been our biggest problem in test matches outside Asia.

yeah, that is a good line up but problem is wicket keeper opening. It is good when we have to bat first but if batting second and wicket keeper has ot open after keeping for 100 plus overs. I have never seen any specialist keeper open in test matches.

In that case, Rahul could also open and Parthiv can bat at No.6.

I just felt that Rahul at No.6 would give our batting outside Asia the much needed solidity.

We also need to find replacement for Vijay. I doubt he has a lot left in him. The way he has batted this year suggests that he is not the same anymore.

Who are our options  ?

Mukund could be the front-runner.  We missed a tick by picking Gambhir ahead of him.

Hedwarkar is in the A team.....but I  am not convinced of his technique for playing either bounce or off-stump deliveries.

Pant maybe ready for the July 2018 tour to England...we can play him as keeper-batsman at No.6  then.

yeah, need to look at Mukund and not bring back GG every time. I suspect they will recall Dhawan.

Too early, going through a slump. We can not have two new openers. Rahul hasn't cemented his place in test side. He is surely our first choice, but being injury-prone, he can't be relied upon. We need to give Vijay sometime, as he has been consistent up till recently when he started losing his form. He was in and out a lot during Gambhir-Sehwag time and as soon as he got the permanent slot, he has been very consistent for us and hence deserves a run for at least up till Australian series.

I think he is talking about developing a back-up for Vijay ..IF  it is required.

It takes time to get a player ready for international cricket.

Vijay has never been consistent at all. Yes, he does score runs here and there, but he never set any series on fire till now and that is the reason he averages 39.  Not even at home, apart from that Aus series in 2012 where he scored 400 plus runs though did have a decent SA series. This year, he is averaging 30.

Mukund has to be the first choice since he has been consistent recently. I would like to see him actually get a chance. He was picked at a time there was a lot of completion and even the likes of Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Rahane and Pujara also had not been picked permanently for the team. Even they were fighting for their place. Now, with all those guys permanent in test side, the competition remains mostly for only opening slot and there aren't too many candidates. I think Mukund deserves to be picked ahead of Pant and everyone. I would like to see Pant first in ODI than in test. He will bat better in test, once he succeeds in ODI'S.
