Silly words by Poppu. If Haroon-al-Rashid picks up lots of wickets tomorrow, he'll end up with egg on his face. Although Rahane looked woefully out of form in the series, I am not convinced by Nair - think he will be an easy wicket, and that leaves a shaky middle order and Kohli has his work cut out once again.

I don't know why fans are hesitant to back Pappu's comments - nothing offensive in there - all factual and blunt truths at worst.  And I'm not worried about extra motivation or any of that.  If anything, he's piling on the pressure on those spinners - both of them are perpetually under the gun in the Pommie setup to begin with - they never get the backing they need from either selection or captaincy - and by calling out their weaknesses and revs and all that - Party Patel is feeding the self-doubt big time.  And if they get motivated and try to do something extra, that's not going to work that well either, likely they will end up doing too much, instead of just bowling tight and maximizing the effect of the conditions.  

Ace move by a veteran player.  He does not inspire any confidence with his keeping behind the stumps, but these comments are like his batting - pleasant surprise, taking it to the opponents without any hesitation.

I don't know about that - Pappu likes the ball coming on to the bat - he does better with the new ball rather than slugging the old one.  But then again, he has shown high skill level and comfort level in attacking spinners, so he should be OK.

Yes, I think he can do well against spin and tired bowlers (if that happens).

 Nair will do very well. Just wait and watch. He will block any chance of Rahane coming back into the test team by performing big-time with the bat in this and next test match. Due to his test performances, he will be part of ODI squad. Rahane is done.

Itd be nice if Indian players showed some grace too sometimes. Have any of them praised the performances of England when England have done well (Kohli on Haseeb aside) This was unnecessary not least because PP is Indias 3rd choice wk, who isnt very good.

^ I guess perceptions can be different.  I don't see anything ungracious about it - England have constantly made self-absorbed - and inaccurate - comments, even after losing matches to quality performances - attributing the vizag loss to the toss for instance.  Again, the key point is that he hasn't really bashed England or said overtly negative things - he's given his view of how the game stands and how things have gone so far from his perspective.

Comes across as rather arrogant, even if that's not what he intended.

And as far as praise for England is concerned - I think its absolutely fine to praise the opponent after the series is over, as India have done in the recent past.  Nobody's calling out for Team India to morph into the "ugly australian".  I think its clear on the field that both teams respect each other.  But I'm enjoying Patel's and also Ashwin's thoughtful comments in the press conferences.

Ashwin is always great to hear. Would make a very fine captain from the cricketing acumen standpoint
