Proper batsman- Rohit,Nair(an option i wud like to see in A-games), KL Rahul ( test opener, dnt knw why people want him to waste at 5,6) 2. Quick starting proper batsman- Pant, kishen, Rahul 3. Proper batsman- Kohli (Dont fiddle with his position at all) 4. Proper batsman who can hit big if needed- (Rahul, Nair, Hooda, Dhoni) 5. Proper batsman who can improvise and hit big when needed- Dhoni, Sarfraz(somewhere in future) 6. Big hitter decent batsman + part-time bowler- Yuvraj(he still is a good hitter), hooda, krunal, Raina 7. Big hitter + proper bowler- Hardik, Krunal 8. Big hitter + proper bowler- this is where i disagree, his 1st job is to be a match winner with bowling (ashwin, kuldeep and jadeja arent big hitter. Jadeja can but hasnt been successful at that. Bhajji was good at it) 1. Proper batsman -- Rohit, Dhawan 2. Quick starting proper batsman -- Pant, , Kishan 3. Proper batsman -- Kohli 4. Proper batsman who can hit big if needed -- Rahul, Nair 5. Proper batsman who can improvise and hit big when needed -- Dhoni, Nair, Kishan 6. Big hitter decent batsman + part-time bowler -- Hooda, Kishan ( If nair plays who can bowl ) 7. Big hitter + proper bowler -- Pandya 8. Big hitter + proper bowler -- Axar, Jadeja 9. Good spinner - Kuldeep, Ashwin 10. Proper pacer -- Shami, Umesh, Nathu, Bhuvi 11. Always look at the available resources first and then devise the best strategy around them instead of choosing players based on formulas. Our team composition in ODI have made us very inconsistent, as we have followed the 2011 model and not adapted to the needs of modern-day high SR ODIs. We have had a poor last 3 years in this format. We have sufficient resources and loads of young talent to fill these positions, but have not utilized them prudently. Edited January 13, 2017 by express bowling
Cricketics Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 I am looking forward to see how Pandy'a progresses. He has been rated really high here by members, and I am not fully impressed yet. I want Pandya to be our James Faulkner. Pandya should look to be like him. If he can better, more power to him. Faulkner is not that fast, but he got varieties and hence he keeps getting important wickets. He would suck against the world best like Kohli, but will find a way to get good important wickets for his team. If Pandya can do that, it would really solve our problems. Pandya bowled well that day in the warm up, especially his first few overs, when he kept simple and bowled wicket to wicket. We need that and we need his batting if he can it. I am reading all the DY Patil scores where he scored runs. Let's see how he does against international bowlers. Until then, he is a mystery hitter for me. I want to see this mystery being unfold and work for India in real. India needs a player like James Faulkner right about now. Pandya has a chance to be one and bowl even faster than him. tweaker 1

I am talking about adopting a rigid and formulaic approach to the game which is a big no no. It is a rough guideline....not a rigid approach but indicative of what the team composition goal should be if you have resources. Rough guidelines have always been followed by good teams.... like Indian teams selecting 2 seamers and 3 or 2 spinners in tests in Asia....choosing 3 seamers and 1 spinner in tests outside Asia etc. In the current era, we often see with ODI teams that they either err on the side of choosing T20 type teams or choosing teams with too many mediocre SR batters with good averages ( India ). The rough guideline is for the purpose of avoiding this. tweaker 1

I have seen DJ`Hood bowl in IPL and he definitely seemed like someone who can bowl full quota in ODIs going forward. Nevertheless, I used the word 'audition' to see how the experiment with the likes of Krunal and DJ`Hood goes because they provide batting firepower too. 5 bowlers is sufficient, although Dhoni and Rohit are well capable of bowling 4-5 overs between themselves. Doesn't matter if one of the bowler has a bad day, the batting is well capable of chasing any target it is set. :) Who said 5 bowlers are enough. What about when one of ur bowlers have an off day or get injured Rohit when was the last time he bowled or how much control wud dhoni have. no captain takes such things so lightly. Those 2-3 over will cost u the game Its not a joke u get up without bowling in domestic and become a full time bowler. How wud get control and rhythem. Hooda hardly bowled full quota of ipl overs forget 10 overs in Odi. Obv Rahane is a quality but in Odi u need extra skills which rahane srsly lacks. Why to waste chances on him when u have such brillant youngsters coming up

Are you mentally lacking or something? I am not sure for how long you have been watching cricket but some truly great teams have played with 5 bowlers day in and day out, winning everything in sight. One does not choose a team based on risks of potential 'injury'. Your approach is, frankly, bogus. Once again, Rahane is quality and has all the tools you seem to think he lacks. Let us just agree to disagree instead of mindless back and forth. Well those teams had world class bowlers If u have noticed rules have changed now, till 40 overs u can only keep 4 fielders out , so part times pretty much wen out of the game post 2011. Count what rahane lacks He plays huge % of dots balls He struggles against spin when he comes into bat against spin at start He throws his wkts after getting a start most times He is highly inconsistent His s/r is low for modern day cricket He lacks release shots. LOI cricket needs match winners specially these days and rahane by no stretch of imagination is a match winner. Infact no one shud even consider him an anchor as he throws his wkts in 40-50s so many times. We can agree or diagree but his record clearly suggest he hasnt done anything gr8 in Odi, infact he has been below avg. Edited January 13, 2017 by Ankit_sharma03

Also, he did not just bash spinners, he hit Zak too in that same innings and his 6 on Zak was probably the best shot of the match. That one innings constituted more than a third of all the runs he scored in that season. It was due to combination of poor team selection and poor captaincy from his opponents. They kept bowling the leggies or the left arm spinner and it was easy pickings for Pandya. One six off an old and semi-retired Zaheer Khan doesn't prove anything. What did he do before or after the IPL season? Even Paul Valthathy had one awesome IPL season. tweaker 1

He is a full twenty2020 package, great catcher, great fielder, can hit the ball down the order and is pretty economical bowler who will make batsmen do crazy things on the other end. He was our unsung hero of 3-0 twenty20 series victory down under. Finch and party were going bezerk every game and it looked always that our 200 run total would get chased down easily by Aussies but Jadeja's 4 over spells in the middle would set Australia backwards and behind the run rate. I will pick Jadeja over Ashwin in 2020 any day. Not a lot to argue against. But Jaddu has scarred me with 2 T20 WCs, and Iwill always think twice before putting him ahead of the likes of Ashwin. Once with the bat in 2009 when Dhoni foolishly sent him in ahead of Yuvi and Yusuf and we ended up losing a winnable game to England. And then the worst one - Barbados 2010. Dropped a sharp chance at point off Bhajji, and then gave up a bunch of 6s to the Aussies - also partly Dhoni's fault because Dhoni bowled him into the wind, letting the aussie slogs float away with the wind. That was my first India game live at the stadium and Jaddu dropped the ball - literally. Then the batting caved and the only man who batted decent on a bouncy track was Tailunt. Ah memories. raki05 1

Also, in IPL, he most often batted in lower order so didn't get enough chances to bat long.
