In any sport where you score goals, silken touch/ pinpoint accuracy is a hugely desirable trait. And IMO after Olympic gymnasts, i think Ice Hockey goalies are the fittest athletes there is. 


If you wanna see what hockey skills are, youtube Pavel Bure, Patrick Kane, Wayne Gretzky and the the Sedin brothers.

I have lived in US for long time, exposed to NHL, and have followed. But don't see the nuance in the sport. I like NBA/NFL/MLB better. I see some strategy and one-up=man-ship in those games. Ice Hockey, I see people skating non-stop. I would rather watch disney-on-Ice for skills.

Well if you have seen ice hockey,you know of goals scored where guys deke (hockey version of dribble) past two guys, splits the defence, does a forehand-backhand-forehand fake to the goalie for a top-corner shot.

 

Ice hockey is the most strategic of the North American sports IMO, because the entire point of hockey is, you have 18 skaters in the team, out of which at any given time 5 of them are on the ice, you skate top speed for 40seconds-1 minute and change, so it is a game totally dependent on match-ups. 

Having a skilled player or a tough guy is not enough, you have to make sure he is on the ice at the right time, against the right opposition.

 

I hate MLB. To me Baseball is handicapped cricket. For pitcher(bowler) or batter, you can do so much less and the game is one of the slowest pace game ever.

ahh..i dont skate at all, its a new medium like swimming. Difficult to adapt having grownup in India, i fear i would fall on the numerous kids who seem to skate circles beneath me.

Oh you WILL fall when you skate. Just make sure you got helmet, wrist guard & knee pads. They will save you from breaking anything when you fall.

In life, learning anything new as an adult requires one to accept the fact that you will embarrass yourself in the beginning, repeatedly. Only then will you have the confidence to try something new & learn something new.

If you want to learn to skate, make sure you got skates that fit well. Otherwise you will not be able to control your foot easily.

In terms of watching - Tennis

 

In terms of sheer skills - Nothing comes close to Ice Hockey or NHL league.

 

Cheapest and most easiest sport to learn and hence the most popular sport - Soccer aka football.

 

Best sunday sport to follow with friends and family - American Football or NFL. 

 

 

 

 

I don't know how they do it, but football (as in gridiron) is easily the best officiated sport. 

Whether its NFL or CFL, its mind boggling how referee decisions are correct 99.99% times. At first, i used to think 'its because they don't mind stoppages & review every whistle if they have to) but then i started to see more football ( followed Seattle's first cup run season) and its stunning how refs get 99% calls correct on-field. 


This is hockey's big weakness: its officiating is so inconsistent. What is a 'play on' in one instance, exactly same player, same play 3 days later is 'OMG! DOUBLE MINOR. 4 MIN IN THE BOX FOR SURE!'. Like...go figure.

 

Basketball, i just can't get into. Seems too boring with 3-4 plays being done successfully every 2 minutes for the whole game. 

 

IMO,its hard not to notice how North American franchises are so much better than cricket boards at developing talent. Its like some cricket boards (especially BCCI) are like ' miners, looking for gold ' mentality. 'Prakriti jo deti haye, use dhoondo, aur istemal karo'. 

Whereas North American franchises have a 'jewellers mentality, who will GIVE you diamonds as you need them and shine even a glass to be as lustrous as a diamond' sometimes. The amount of foresight, investment, etc. in talent development & team selections being ruthlessly value-oriented, is just lacking in cricket. To me, that is cricket's biggest downfall. Even ECB or CA are nitwits compared to practically any franchise.
