Congrats to him. Intresting to see Deepika Karmakar also given the award. What did she achieve? I know she did great for her age and inspired many but did not relly win a medal or somethinng.

her acheivement is far greater than cricket...

i will say something like joe/kohli/kane/smith (fab 4) level cricketer emerging from  afghanistan or nepal... an analogy!

Yes, true. I could be wrong but we do tend to exaggerate a lot when a sportsman or woman m does a bit and then often forget to patronize or give importance to sports person who should be ahead in the order of getting laurels. 

 

I think Padmashree is for contribution to the game, which is perhaps is appropriate for Deepika then as she has surely contributed well.

Karmakar medalled in the World Gymnastics - pulled off the Pradyumnova which is a rare feat.  Sure she didn't medal in the Olys, but got to the final round.  This level of success given the lack of facilties and training is something really special.  Right move to reward her with national recognition at least.  India has a lot of latent talent that could find success in Gymnastics - the sport requires flexibility and athleticism - not size.  And its a very medal heavy event as part of the olympics.  Just need to channel the talent and provide the platform and facilities.
