Identifying, Developing and introducing players with international potential

This is such an important and such a difficult job.  This has to start at the grass-root level and then goes up the ladder to the national selectors and the team management. A strong FC system helps a lot.  The NCA and MRF Pace Foundation have played big roles too.  A-team selections are very important too.

 

Some points which I  feel would help improve the process even more --

• Having more A-team series.
• Playing Duleep Trophy in the form of a league with 5 teams ( Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, White etc ) ....with many games. The quality of opposition in both cases would be tougher and  cricketers with potential will develop better.
• Choosing A-teams is a very important step as it forms the pipe-line to the national team.  The selectors have done a good job this time and selected young players with true international potential instead of well-known names who have very little chance of representing India in the future.  Hopefully, they will carry on  their good work in this vein.  
• For A teams----- choose atleast one genuine fast bowler and one spinner who can turn the ball big...... who come across as the best among such bowlers.
• Our system produces great international batsmen with regularity, but not great bowlers.  This is where the selectors and our team management must use their talent-spotting-eyes ..... and choose bowlers who have the potential to make it big in international cricket.  Fast track them to the A team and national team rather than let them toil many years in FC.
• Create a pool of such bowlers and let them train under Dravid and Kumble.  We have seen Pandya, Umesh etc. all get better this way. let Kumble and Kohli see such bowlers..... let such bowlers bowl to our international batsmen in the nets and learn.
• Don't choose A-teams based on last year's Ranji stats only. The selectors have used their talent-spotting eye this time and that is the right way.
• I hope the team management introduces more youngsters in the national team in bilateral ODIs and T20Is, rather than picking a bunch of experienced  players. If there are 2 players of equal capability, choosing the younger player would help build a team for the long term.
• Having a top international player like Dravid, as coach of the A team, has helped immensely.  In the future, hopefully, all A-team coaches will be of that quality only as it is such an important but often neglected position.
• The communications between the national team coach and A-team coach has been another wonderful step in bringing forth top talent like Nair, Pandya and Jayant....hopefully, this process will continue in the future too among other coaches.  Kumble's doctrine of Unity of purpose of all stake-holders is an excellent idea.

Now we have Kumble & Dravid as coach, but we need players such as Sehwag,Zaheer,Aakash Chopra as selectors.

The selector should know what is required to be successful in international cricket.

Genuine fast bowers, who have some skill too, are rare anywhere in the world.  If they can be picked up and groomed, they can become strike bowlers at international level.  

 

They need to be identified and developed with special attention by the selectors.

 

Nathu Singh, Basil Thampi and Ankit Rajpoot could be such pacers among the uncapped pacers in India.

 

Among the out-of-favour capped pacers, Aaron bowled quite accurately on the last A tour.  Hope he is being monitored keenly after his return from injury.  He is playing SMA Trophy now.

We need selectors who can project performance in future based on talent shown today. This is ever so important in selections for India A and under 19s.

Some of the good  uncapped  "International type pacers"  playing  in our domestic cricket are   ---

 

Those pacers who look ready for international cricket in some format or the other  are  Shardul Thakur,  Basil Thampi,  Nathu Singh and perhaps Aniket Chaudhuri.

 

Some other good ones who can be tried in A teams are Ankit Rajpoot, Sandeep Warrier, Pradeep Sangwan and perhaps Navdeep Saini

 

Rookie pacers would be Md. Siraj,  Mohsin Sayyed and perhaps Amit Kuila

doesn't inspire much confidence to me,
earlier he was a trundler (i know his pace has increased a bit around high 130's)
but has he improved that much to be placed with other exciting names ?

He bowled well in the last Duleep Trophy

 

Lots of balls in good areas, got some swing on occasions, sufficient pace and a good bouncer.

 

He is not the best of the best but can't be ignored either if the team is looking for a left-armer

• Its high time bowlers like Zaheer and Nehra shud be used as coaches with young bowlers. Nehra can work senior team bowler when he is in t20 squad and rest of time he can spend with A-teams Training with them and also coaching them. Vice versa when Nehra is national duty zaheer could take that time to work with A-team and u-19 bowler so he also gets an idea who can bought into national side. 
• Guys like Bharat arun, Lalchand rajput and Pravin amre should also be used in great capacity as they have had positive feedback from senior players. 
• With every new series 1-2 potential players shud be picked as complete extra in squad and kept with team . For example someone like Avesh, prithvi can be taken to Tour to australia as in any capacity. So they can spend time with team and have exposure to overseas condition. They could also get to play practice games. Who knws with any injury anyone might get lucky. If we go to lanka for the sake of exposure take rahul chahar and it would best for him to learn from kumble n ashwin n get to bowl at pujara,vijay,kohli, rahul, rahane in nets. This Exp will make these guys better cricketers and they ll know what should they do to get to international level. They can learn how someone like Virat, rahane, ashwin prepares for the game. 
• Every zone should keep conducting fast bowlers search specially in small districts. I find it hard to believe that how Punjab, haryana , himachal are producing trundlers like Rishi, Kaul. There should some strong kids in north region who can bowl fast. 
• If there is something that India has been rich with traditionally its spin bowlers. Lets not loose our biggest strength. Camp should be organized where Right from Seniors like ashwin to talented youngsters should take part in it. Ex-players from kumble to Bedi should take part and share their thoughts. Spinners should be encouraged to flight and deceive batsman and think on aggressive terms. 
• Selectors, captain, coaches should identify prospects talents and should communicate with them about how they see them and what they expect from them. Someone like Deepak hooda shud be told that he conistently needs to start bowling few overs every game coz he can that 6th bowler India is looking in LOI. Someone like Krunal can be told to work on his game against fast bowling. 
• BCCI with a lot of money should hire small n local channels in every region to cover every Domestic game . M sure it would be very hard for these selectors to see every game at a time. For 3 0r 5 how many of them are left its humanly not possible to see every game that goes in same day. What if they miss a terrific innings or a spell. 
• Challenger trophy should be bought back in a more and organized competitive way . Best cricketers can only come out of hard cricket. Many yrs ago Challenger trophy gave us Uthappa, sreesanth , chawla in few games. If a young bowlers like Sreesanth n chawla gets sachin out that gets noticed . Similarly it shud be done with duleep trophy. Both these tournament shudnt be haphazardly organized . They shud given proper time and space in domestic calendar. If needed SMA shud be scraped, there is already ipl how much more t20 u need. 
• There should be plans regd certain cricketers who have recently made debut so that they dont fall of the radar or do the same mistakes as many have done in past. For Eg when we play champions trophy Jayant n Nair shud be sent to play county as they wnt be selected in ODI squad. They shud be pushed to use that time to take their skills to next level. Many of our players in past could have done this but didnt. Players like Wasim, Sachin reaped huge benefits by playing county at start of their careers.

Selectors being slated again but the ones they are choosing are coming up trumps in international cricket at the moment.

Kumble said in a recent interview that players like Jayant Yadav and Karun Nair were included in the side based on Rahul Dravid's recommendations and he rated Dravid's suggestions regarding young players highly.

 

We also saw in case of Pandya that he was left out of the A team touring Australia by the selectors. He got in due to an injury to Vijay Shankar. Infact, there were quite a few changes made to the touring A team after the initial selection, perhaps due to Dravid's recommendations.

 

Kedar Jadhav was a good pick by the selectors but then again, he is perhaps the only player in our domestic cricket who averages  50 with a SR of 100+ in List A  ( domestic one day matches )  after playing sufficient matches.  There has been a lot of criticism for delaying his selection.

one more thing is that we play too less no. of list A games in a calender year.
It took 8 years for likes of manish pandey, kedar jadhav etc. odi specialists to play 50 list A games.

ideally everyone should play atleast 20-25 list A games in a year. 
So that an odi specialist can be identified in 2 years time.

no need to waste time on zonal T20 and mushtaq ali...when we already have 2 months of ipl and regional leagues.
