Agree with everything, except the highlighted bit. Root was poor in the 2nd T20, couldn't put bat on ball to Bumrah's slower ones.. His wicket hardly changed the result.. I do believe he has a lot of potential in LOIs including T20 though.

Thing is that Kohli has set such high standards in every format including twenty20s and since Root is sort of Kohli's rival in today's cricketing world, we start judging and comparing his twenty20 performance and record to Kohli which is wrong and unfair to Root. Root is still pretty good, just that Kohli is a Phenom.
YCCC Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 Can't say I'm too sad to see the back of that tour. Good luck in your next assignments

kosingh Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 Tour was too long and spread out a little too much. England is one of the more fun sides to play against, but still, ready to move on.

England could have done this, that or t'other and still been soundly beaten by this excellent Indian side. The one day side was the best that could have been picked (maybe ditch Morgan but I shan't go into all that again). We have a dearth of decent spinners so I can't think of any alternatives to those selected. One bowler who I think would have made a real difference with his sheer pace is Mark Wood.

Malcolm Merlyn Posted February 1, 2017 Author Posted February 1, 2017 He is, currently coming back to fitness and will be part of an England lions squad to Sri Lanka starting at the latter end of this month. Should presumably be back at full fitness by the English summer. What about the Overtons? Also why no Broad for the LOIs? England needs to find a good spinner if they are to compete in Asia.
YCCC Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 Never mind the Overtons, the Currans are the brothers to watch. From what I've seen the younger one (can't remember if it's Tom or Sam) has the most potential, although both can go a long way. With regards to Broad, although he hasn't officially retired from LOIs I think the England hierarchy want to "manage his workload" for Tests and are happy to let a crop of young bowlers develop and learn as they go leading up to the world cup, which I am happy with as long as there are signs of development. If Broad is still around by then and England need an older head to steady things I don't see why he can't come in just for the tournament. I'll repeat myself here but it is crucial for the future of this England team that Wood stays injury free. I think he's that good. sandeep 1

Malcolm Merlyn Posted February 1, 2017 Author Posted February 1, 2017 Are Currans genuinely fast?Or are the ARs? Also England must concentrate on spinners.
Malcolm Merlyn Posted February 1, 2017 Author Posted February 1, 2017 Believe Tom averages 86-87mph at an estimate, Sam probably slightly slower at around 83-84mph (got the potential to up on that being only a teenager of course though) but can get that typical potent left armer swing back in. Sam's the one touted to be an all rounder but Tom's also handy with the bat. Sam was actually still eligible to be part of the England U19 squad to tour to India this winter but has been picked for the England Lions instead (as well as Tom). Crane's clearly been recognised by the England selectors and coaching staff, his name was mentioned briefly by Bayliss in a recent interview in India and he's part of the squad for the England North v England South games that are taking place in the UAE sometime prior to the English summer. England also used him as a net bowler when he had a break from county cricket to try and replicate Yasir Shah a bit last year I believe. Has spent quite a bit of time with Stuart MacGill whilst in Sydney. Hope England concentrate on Crane.Send him to Indiaa not Australia if you guys want him to be really good. TBH England have many these 85-86 MPH bowlers who bat.Need someone express like Mark Wood.

Not club.Send him to one of the academies. There are many run by former Indian spinners in big cities with very good facilities.May be in future.
King Tendulkar Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 O by the way whining England . In match just gone Raul was bowled of over stepped no ball by stokes . Unbelievable not refereed to tv umpire to check front foot as norm much worse error then root one as tv usually used did we moan? No Morgan we just carried on and whooped your arses

Not exactly the same. No we overcame umpire error and shrugged it off to win. Good teams do that poor teams like England have to cling on to every decision . Also root once again showed he can't finish games anyway and in last game choked again . we won all 3 series yet England perceive injustice. Pathetic WeStMiDz 1
kosingh Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Not sure why we are even debating the umpiring errors. The Indian team has on more than one occasion whined about umpiring. The English have whined about umpiring. And pretty much all other teams have whined about umpiring. I'd certainly want my captain to publicly complain about poor umpiring, especially if it is in the middle of a series. That way, you are pressuring the guilty umpires to either be removed from the remaining games or make decisions that aren't against you. I'm not a fan of captains complaining about umpiring after a series is over. That can't possibly have any benefit. But the benefit of complaining about umpiring when some games still remain is that you may pressure the umpires to be neutral or even be on your side. In this case, the pressure from Morgan worked. Just like the pressure from Dhoni helped remove Umpire Kulkarni and pressure from Ganguly helped remove Bucknor. Morgan succeeded in removing Shamshuddin, and the new guy that came was friendlier towards England. That England still sucked it up on the field is another matter. But their complaints about umpiring did lead to umpires becoming more England friendly. sandeep and Lannister 2

putrevus Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 It was very competitive cricket thru out the tour, England team competed very well in all forms. With some luck they could have won both LOI and T20 series. sandeep 1

Right... Context matters. Aggregate stats don't show the difference in batting approach and outputs. 9 out of 10 T20 teams will have more need of a Raina than a Root. England can carry Root because they happen to have a happy surplus of big-hitting capable batsmen who bat at high SR as default, and if anything, need a bit of solidity. Most teams have that type of player, but a shortage of guys who can hit boundaries, and set the innings momentum to a par+ scoring rate. Raina's aggregate numbers don't match the actual reality - Look at yesterday's game - Indian innings was going nowhere until he came in and forced up the momentum. He can be counted on to do this fairly consistently, or get out. You will rarely see a "slow" innings from him - he's never going to be a balll-eater. Root by contrast, rarely carries the scoring rate - he's better suited to be the solid anchor that others bat around. If you don't recognize this, then its your fan-tinted glasses skewing your perception. express bowling 1
