Did Kohli underbowl pacers in first inning?

Yadav was removed from attack after bowling 2 overs in which he picked a wicket.

India bowled 95 overs and Yadav bowled 12. Jayant who was more expensive bowled more overs.

Aus were 149-2 and till then spinners had bowled a lot including spells in first hour and then 47-7.

As write this, Starc is ripping apart Indian batting line up. Did captain show lack of confidence in pacers and underbowled them and overbowled spinners on this track.

India just had two pacers of which Ishant is  of no use since even he bowls good he just manages atmost 1 wicket. He just keeps bowling good lines but not good enough to take wickets. How much can you bowl Umesh then? For Australia both hazzlewood and Stark are wicket taking.

Kohli did not show lack of confidence in pacers, he just showed more confidence in spinners.

Our best bowlers are Ashwin-Jadeja and hence they bowled the most overs. They have earned the right. Umesh bowled well and with this consistency he showed yesterday, if he can continue, he will start to get more overs in future.

I think he got carried away with the fact that there are two land handers. He should have started with Umesh atleast but he can turn around say he is better with the old ball,so it was not a insane decision.Only thing I didnt like yesterday was taking the new ball when it was not needed.

And the other bowler bowling some overs would have been futile as always.

It's just not about bowling more. Of course spinners will bowl more in India. But generally it's 65-35 in terms in most of the home matches. Wasn't expecting it to drop to 50-50 suddenly in this match. However this was one inning where Yadav bowled only 12 out of 95 even after taking wickets when he should have bowled at least 20.

That seemed the case yesterday.

Pacers didn't get enough overs in first session.

New ball was taken even when Yadav was doing well.

Yadav was underbowled overall.

Jayant was overbowled.

4 mistakes made by captain Kohli yesterday.

I just don't like Ishant playing tests in India. He has lost his ability to take wickets in India consistently since 2011 WI series. He was averaging 27 before that with 50 plus wickets. He has now done decently well overseas in last 3 years but awful at home.

yes not making good use of reverse swing. i feel he has reached his potential and we may do well with someone new.

If Shami were in the team, pacers would have bowled more overs.

This pitch was spinning from over one and there was reasonable bounce for the spinners too. We have two top spinners in the team. Why would they not bowl lots of overs  ?

Agree with you completely.

Kohli's bowling rotations are always puzzling.

His field placings are improving -- like when he put in that leg slip yesterday.

He brings a lot of great things as captain, but like most captains, he has couple of areas that could get better.

Lol so after what you all saw in half an hour, you still feel Kohli underbowled pacers?

He trusted spinners more and rightly so.

After seeing how Jayant was bowling, definitely Kohli underbowled Yadav. His trust in spinners during first session was OK. He gave bowl to Ashwin and co which is understandable given the pitch conditions. But allowing Aus to score 149-2 on this pitch was certainly too much.

My main issue was taking the new ball in the 2nd innings.

The pacers as well as the spinners were bowling well and running through the Aussie lineup with the old ball.... with the ball reversing and turning.

New ball often results in quicker runs with edges flying for 4s and the ball travelling more quickly.

There was no cricketing reason to take the new ball as wickets were falling very very quickly anyway.

That was a blunder. On a better pitch, 50 runs for last wicket wouldn't hurt, but here it was half of the runs India scored in first inning.

Exactly. The single biggest blunder that Kohli did. It brought Aussies right back into the game, as it also gave them confidence that they have a par score.
