Everything tells me hes trying to live up to this tag of being an aggressive captain , but his idea of aggressive captaincy ( like a lot of fans ) is picking hacks like Rohit/Dhawan over proven test players cos they can apparently score fast ? playing 5 batsmen on bowler friendly pitches which I hear you need to win a test match and bowling fast bowlers on spin friendly pitches , cos its pretty cool to see fast bowlers bowl at 145 mph ? . You dont see issue with the kind of thinking here? How can you say that its just a draw ? I was almost sure of a 4-0 win looking at this Oz side , even a 2-1 win is embarrassing against this side . We have not even started playing away . 1. Virat as captain ranges from being magnificent to utterly mediocre but its just that there is a lot of potential. I agree with the points you raised about Virat's blunders and I was vehemently against most of them. Some of the decisions he took were atrocious. But then he has done lots of cool stuff too. So as a fan, you are willing to see how things turn out for the future. 2. As for expecting 4-0 in this series, yes that should have been the case but if you think about it...isn't it a reflection of life? We want something (4-0 win) but we don't even get 25% of it (fighting tooth and nail to even win the series). We could either feel disgusted by this performance OR look at it from a different way. This is a series where our biggest match winner has sucked big time. This is a series where our batting's frailties against big spin is shown up big time at the precise moment when we weren't mentally ready for it (Pune where we were too lethargic). This is a series where we were on the verge to become 0-2 for sure at one point of time. This is a series where we were under pressure to prevent a defeat even in the last test. And yet we stand here....as the front runners to win the series due to the sheer will power shown by our team. Even the biggest culprit (Ashwin) still made it count when it really mattered for India. Yes, it does not solve our problems or will help us win overseas but it tells us where we stand and gives us so much data on where we need to improve. In this series, we witnessed the fighting performances of Rahul, Vijay, Pujara, Rahane (even when he couldn't play spin), Saha...the emergence of Jaddu the force....the results of Umesh (22 average in series)...the leadership of Kohli (not talking about tactics)....the lessons that Ashwin learnt in this series & season (some people on the internet may be laughing at him today but these experiences are worth its weight in gold and are far more valuable than some fifers/tenfers on turners bowling in peak form). This team is not a world beater yet. It may or may not become a world beater. But what it has is character. Loads and loads of character. And it has got raw ability. We may not have a clean sweep record but we learnt far more from this series than we ever could have in any whitewashes in India. Lots to improve and long way to go but there is so much to celebrate about this team. If an embarrassing series against Aus is the price to pay, so be it. King Tendulkar Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 I have to say this was a terrible loss . Won the toss and had first use of belter of a track yes still got thrashed hang your head in shame india and kohli o wait assumed we got demolished after reading the posts . Wow we lost toss and by day 5 Aussies clung on for a draw ! Mosher, kruiser and philcric 3

That was a deliberate strategy. Ashwin opened the attack with Jadeja and he was conceding a boundary every over. It was only on day 5 when Kohli started with Jaddu and other seamers.

Ashwin gave 4 boundaries but if you watched Warner, he was shaky as hell and trying to smash everything. One ball was wide and cut away. Other 2 boundaries were due to Warner wanting to take initiative. In the meanwhile: 1. He could have been bat pad out. A touch wide of the fielder. 2. He could have popped it to mid off (sliced one without being in control and cleared the fielder) 3. He could have been lbw after being hit on the backleg and could have been out if not for the angle. All to Ashwin in 2 overs. Final tally may say Ashwin conceded a lot but he didn't bowl badly at all. There were 2 bad balls (one to Warner and Renshaw) but apart from that, there were quite a few good balls where he had Warner scratching his head. --- Even today, he created a few chances. In the first 2 overs, he looked like getting both Handscomb and Marsh out anytime. And I would say even later on, he created a few more chances later on too. Its just that he bowled a few crap overs, had a poor reputation going into this innings which is the problem. He is not his usual self but I didn't feel he bowled crap throughout the innings. Compare it by keeping Jaddu as the baseline and see. With the old ball, in peak form and with the rough for the lefties, Jaddu couldn't breakthrough. That's cos the pitch was like that and you needed more time to bowl opposition out and Ashwin needed to be his usual self with his fizz and turn (which he wasn't). This is the Australian team lost 9 tests in a row in Asia , white washed in both SriLanka (the same team who cant even beat Bangladesh) and Pakistan and lost at home to SA .4 of their top six has never played in India and have combined less than 30 tests btw them . We should be romping to 4-0 here by all predictions .Yes it isnt the be and all but struggling to beat this Aussie team is just awful. If our best bowler is struggling with injury why are going into this test with just 4 bowlers ? And whose fault is it that we played Mishra against England instead of blooding a youngster . The fact is not a single bowler(Jayant excepted ) has debuted in nearly 20 tests and more than 2 years under Kohli and we still persist with Ishant despite his awful record . These are very much justified criticisms just like most were praising when we were beating England 4-0.

He was still not hitting the right areas most of the times and was a bit too short or wide on occasions. He created some chances but was giving away runs as well. So it made sense to have another bowler keep it tight while Jadeja attacked from the other end. I didnt say he bowled poorly but he was definitely not at his best, most likely the effects of playing a long home season and also could be injury related. Edited March 20, 2017 by kubrickian

Gollum Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Even if he makes mistakes he is willing to learn from his mistakes and improve, he has an open mind. Unlike the period 2011-2015 where we played with the same formula irrespective of results. King Tendulkar 1

Even apart from injury, there are certain issues Ashwin has to sort out. The trends are all too apparent. But as a captain, the first goal is to go for the strategy that gets you the best result and if that strategy doesn't work, you switch to plan B. Kohli did miss the trick here. One can't say if he did that we would have won but we can wonder. New ball on this pitch does help spinners a lot more. Edited March 20, 2017 by sensible-indian

U don't have Starc or wasim at ur disposal kohli, u have a trundling brigade in ur bag. So use them cautiously. His first bowlers? Prince_ 1

It was that ever since Ashwin's debut, he has never outright failed with the ball or bat in any tests. He would atleast score 30 in one innings or pick good amount wickets in the test. Home or away. Inside or outside Asia. The only exception would be Joberg but then there he was not out in first innings. Last game, he came so close to breaking that trend but in one spell he saved it. This test, he failed with the bat once, ball once and was bowling in the 3rd innings. He was unlikely to bat in the 4th innings so I felt if he chipped in with 3 wickets and with Jaddu's form, we could win the game. It wasn't meant to be. His first ever test where he failed with both bat and ball outright (results point of view). Streak ends. Was impressive while it lasted. Edited March 20, 2017 by sensible-indian Sidhoni 1

Shunya Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Nothing wrong with having Kohli the captain. We cannot win everything, its a fair enough result. Ultimate challenge still awaits in future. However, like many said earlier, he does act as if he is aggressive and pioneer in changing some culture which is just hogwash. As someone pointed out he is trying to look different from Dhoni. Could be just a PR strategy, playing to the fan's aggresion. I hope he and his teammates dont get worn out taking this a bit too far.

If Indian bowlers especially the spinners can't dismiss a non Asian team in the last day of the test match in their own backyard then there's definitely something wrong with them. If we had lead of around 230 the scoreboard pressure would have also played a part
