PM Modi Biopic Stopped By Election Commission Till End Of Elections

"PM Narendra Modi" was scheduled for release on April 11, coinciding with start of national elections

NEW DELHI:

The Election Commission has stopped the release of "PM Narendra Modi", a biopic on the Prime Minister, till national elections are over. The commission said that any biopic "which has the potential to disturb the level playing field during the elections should not be displayed in the electronic media", effectively banning the screening of the film, just a day before its release, coinciding with the start of elections.

The commission, in its order outlining its decision, said it was vital that "the power of media is not used in such a manner which affects the general conduct" of the elections.

It also said that any complaints on this matter will be examined by a panel headed by a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court had refused to consider a petition by a Congress leader seeking to stop the release of the film, saying "too much of court time is wasted on these non-issues". The top court also said that it was for the Election Commission to decide if the film tilted the balance in favour of the ruling BJP, as alleged by the opposition Congress.

The Congress had alleged that the film's release close to the national election violated the model code of conduct. The party had earlier told the Election Commission that the film was "no artistic venture. It is a political venture".

Hours after the Supreme Court order, the film was certified by the Censor Board, clearing the way for its release.

"I hope no political parties across India has any problem, because the Election Commission, the CBFC, and all the courts have cleared all the pleas, and our film is ready for release. We are grateful to each and everyone who have prayed for us," the film's producer Sandeep Singh had said in a statement.

Last week, Vivek Oberoi, who plays PM Modi in the film, headlined the controversy surrounding the biopic after he targeted the Congress, wondering "if they are scared of the film or of Chowkidar's danda".

The Congress promptly responded, saying it's a "bogus film of a flop hero, a flop producer and is made on a flop person who has proved to be a zero."

Good decision by EC. Now Liberandus, Sickulars and Khangressis shouldn't bark that democracy is in danger, constitutional bodies are being hijacked bla bla

Dogs will continue barking, it's their inherent nature. And these are rabid dogs, they'll also bite.

good decision, but it was such an obvious one, that it should have been taken right away.

The election commission of India has a lot of goodwill, credibility, and trust gained over the years - localized issues with corruption notwithstanding.

National Institutions need to be protected from being infected with politics.  Ends don't justify some means, regardless of 'patriotism', or other BS.

Selective decision, Congress Eco-system at work. Where does the jurisdiction end? How about Godi TV channels promoting the same lie over and over again without hearing the other side, objectively. How about the TV shows which are totally biased on either side? How about political rallies? THey all influence elections. Does the EC go around stopping all of them? How about the FB, Twitter, Whatspapp ads that are blasting day and night to influence ? This is a selective outrage from the COngi media.

Now more than ever we need a TN Seshan, elections have to be fought clean/fairly to ensure democracy isn't reduced to a farce. All parties are responsible for the current mess, worst will be the Dravidian parties with their bribery/gifts/votes purchase. I won't even mention Bengal here because elections are fought with bombs, guns, swords, mallets, sickles, knives.

I like how the nakli liberals are silent. Sab rudalioan gutter se baar nikalthey hai jab politically convenient hai, lekin jab FOS/FOE paar hamla hoge, sab nakli liberaloan gutter mein wapas crawl karte hai. :phehe:

Humara desh mein, nahi saari duniya mein, 95% so-called 'liberal' nakli hai, isliye yeh so-called RW grow karte hai.

Itna low-budget, low-quality film se kya hoga?

Udta Punjab was released pre-election in Punjab and it changed the complete narrative to drugs and helped Congress win.

And that brings to Punjab, has the drugs problem been solved? Where is the 100 day report or yearly report of Congress government? It seems such accountability happens only with BJP govenment....
