This should be a new rule in test cricket for Indian cricketers

Cut 20 % of match fees for any fielder who drops a catch. Its understandable if you dont take wickets or score runs(you'll eventually get dropped if you dont deliver) but its criminal to drop catches in test matches. It just means you are lazy and not practicing and letting the whole team down. Its inexcusable.

Nothing less than cutting match fees will make these fielders take catching seriously.

We also have to remember we never had such quick bowlers like Yadav ,Shami,Ishant in history we are not used to slip catching at ranjinlevel to such pace.Hopefully team management decides who are best bets and sticks with them. Also we have to look at whether one is right handed or left third slip will always have to be lefthand dominant unlike Nair.

Get a ball thrown at you at serious pace and tell me if you catch it every time even after some practice.

Every team drops catches.

Its not just 1 or 2. India has not shown any improvement in this area. There have been regulation catches dropped in the slip cordon in almost every game since Dravid, Laxman have retired and have cost India dearly especially in overseas tests as well. Taking catches in tests should be a mandatory skill, because it takes a lot of effort to prize out a wicket.

I'm sorry but that's not an excuse. Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Ishant, Sreesanth were quite quick as well but so many catches have never been dropped off their bowling.

Agree that our slip catching to seamers is not up to the mark but I don't think it's down to a lack of practice.

What else could be the reason ? The fielders are either not concentrating every ball or just not practicing enough. Its a skill that could be learned.

They were not as quick at test level also guys like Dravid, vvs,Sachin were excellent catchers with huge concentration powers unlike current crop.I think Vijay Rahane are your 2 slippers have to find another one .

Too harsh. employ a better coach , get somebody from MLB like what Aus does. We need some unconventional coaching

It could be harsh but its unbelievably frustrating to see fielders dropping regulation catches like schoolboys at test level and there has been no visible improvement in this area. Its so unfair to bowlers and the whole team as well.

Every team drops catches.

India drops about 50% of the catches in slips off fast bowlers. That is unacceptable. It costs matches overseas.

Why does a batsman miscue a shot sometimes? Why does a bowler bowl a rank delivery sometimes? It's all down to bad execution at that particular moment. Practice reduces that, I agree, but at the end of the day it's down to an individual in a particular moment. There's no recipe for a 100% success rate.

Don't see what a coach can do when dropping countless simple slip catches, these are not skiers under floodlights.

A coach can polish off the raw talent and add a bit extra but cannot teach the basics to international level players who should be more or less the finished article.

If a batsman continues to fail, doesnt he get dropped. Same should apply to players who drop catches regularly as well. As I said, its not an one-off incident. India has been dropping catches pretty much every game in recent times. This will get worse as we tour overseas and it could prove very costly.

How about penalties every time a bowler over steps as well.  They should be practicing that also.  Inexcusable.  Also a penalty for every full toss bowled.  That's also criminal.  How about penalties for playing a false shot for batsmen.  Or for playing away from the body against the new ball.

I get the frustration.  But banjo, bakwaas mat jhaado.

Look, we definitely have a bigger problem with catching than top teams should. But financial penalties aren't going to do it.

These guys make millions.  Fining them a few thousand rupees is going to do f-all.  Shame is a big motivator.  So is being dropped.  I'm sure internally, the coaches and team mgmt already have a pool that enforces such fines - whether financial, or otherwise - carrying the bowler's kit for a few days after dropping a sitter, extra laps, or extra catching sessions for entire team on a drop etc.  Lots of teams do such things for motivations at the team level or unit level.

Slip catching is in dire need of improvement.  And has been for a couple of seasons now.  Let's see if the team improves.  If it doesn't, then sure the coaches need to be held accountable along with the players.  Money aint the way though.

For starters I would like this Sridhar guy replaced by a former cricketer who was good in the slips. Maybe Stephen Fleming or someone from Aus or SA. We can't continue dropping multiple catches in the slips every game.
