Ashwin coming from around the wicket to Hazlewood and the third delivery is edged solidly to second slip who takes a sharp low catch. But, hang on, despite everyone jogging off the pitch, the umpires are stopping everyone. The TV umpire has overruled the soft on-field dismissal of out - with scant evidence in my opinion - and play continues.

 

If anything the 3rd umpire was lucky Hazlewood was dismissed without adding anything further.Otherwise he would would have created a huge controversy for overturning that decision.

To me it wasn't conclusive either way. From the side angle he did appear to have his fingers under. In such situations the third umpire usually goes with the on field soft call. We have seen time and again that catches like this always look dodgy in replays. So there is absolutely no way Vijay cheated. Even Ian Chapell on cricinfo said that he thought that it was a catch and such catches should stay with the on field decision because replays are always inconclusive and I fully agree with him.

I echo Ian Chappell's view. In TV replays it always seems like the ball hits the ground, even if the fingers were underneath it. It is because the grass is quite tall and if there is some blades of grass through the hand it gives that illusion.

 

The soft signal given by umpire was OUT. There was no evidence to overrule it showing that it clearly hit the ground. So should have stayed Out.

I disagree with Chappelli, players like Ponting and Mclarke have grassed catches and have claimed it. Nobody should be believed, If on field umpire wants a referral , then it has to go to third umpire, if it is doubtful on screen, then so be it. Players will always claim it and even if they are not cheating, they will not be sure.

The Ponting and Clarke ones are different, they took the catch and then clearly kept the ball on the ground before they finished the catch, it was more to do with their imbalance while diving. But with low catches the fingers are usually underneath unless it is clear that it bumps before it enters the palm of hands.

 

Also the soft signal here was Out, and there was no clear evidence to overrule it saying that the ball definitely hit the ground.

I see nothing wrong with Smith here, perfectly understandable. Player claims catch then sprints away to get his pads on before being called back. Yep that would piss me off too.
