Dhoni will captain CSK or Team India better than anyone else, but Smith has shown that he can handle unfamiliar teams as well, which is a good trait for captain. He has covered the lesser captaincy probably by motivating Pune much better, using better bowling and fielding changes, and better tactics. As a result he has taken Pune who were 7th rankied last year to 4th ranked thus far this year.
