World Championship of Cricket in Australia 1985

In 1985 the Test-playing nations of the world gathered in Australia for a one-day tournament that saw India and Pakistan meet in the final.

Check out Kapil's perfect yorker, gavaskar's jadejaesque runout, shiva bamboozling with his legspin :hatsoff:

To suggest that Sunday's ICC Champions Trophy is the first time the subcontinental neighbours have squared off in the final of a major, multi-team global ODI tournament is to ignore one of world cricket's more curious competitions.

Not the semi-regular Australasian Cup events staged for nakedly commercial reasons in Sharjah from the mid-80s to the early 90s, featuring teams from Asia and the Pacific (including a fledgling UAE combination one year) and won in all three iterations by Pakistan.

Rather, the only true tournament pulling together the game's pre-eminent outfits from across the world and in which India and Pakistan were to fight for the ultimate prize, was the grandly titled World Championship of Cricket staged in Australia at the end of the 1984-85 summer.

..

In addition to stars the calibre of West Indies' Viv Richards, India's Kapil Dev, Pakistan's Imran Khan and England captain David Gower, Australia's 14-man squad included Tasmanian Peter Faulkner (father of current allrounder, James) and fast bowler now BBC commentator Jonathan Agnew played his final ODI for England in the tournament opener against the host nation.

Great video.

A bit negative, but watching Srikanth tonk the Pakistanis in that video makes me think of that Fakhar Zaman fella.   Not that he's a great batsman or anything.  But then again, neither was Cheeka.

That's a great comparison!

Are you seriously comparing Cheeka with this Fakhar hack? I mean seriously?

Cheeka had 100s against some world class bowling units in his time, in much more challenging pitches. He was a very good opener for his era. 2 years before this match he top scored in a low scoring match in our 1st finals against the GOAT bowling attack. Check out his 38, arguably the most under rated odi innings by any Indian batsman. He was a trendsetter in ODI cricket and had a good enough technique to play test cricket against Hadlee, Imran and Botham. The hack we are facing on Sunday is a poor man's Robin Uthappa.

Damn.. interesting to watch the highlights..

So why was Kapil captain in 83 WC and then Sunny in 85? Any idea?

Straight after the 83 world we got thrashed by Windies and lost 5-0 in the ODIs at home.

Our record didn't improve ,and hence Gavaskar replaced Kapil as captain.

Funnily Kapil again replaced Gavaskar as captain for 1987 world cup after a string of poor results leading up to it.

Gavaskar announced at the end of match interview in the final after beating Pakistan, that he was done with the Captaincy.  I'm dating myself a bit here, but this tournament is my earliest memory of watching cricket.  I can almost remember Gavaskar's face when he told the surprised interviewer about his captaincy decision.

Dude, I can see how much of a hack Zaman is, and taking nothing away from Srikanth - he's done a lot.  But the parallel exists.   And came to my mind.   So shared my thoughts.

Parallel exists ? Seriously?

Check out how Srikanth hooked the Windies fearsome attack in ODIs that too without helmet.Even in that awesome 83 final.

You are comparing with Fakhar who can't play short ball to save his life ?

Srikanth was one of the finest openers of that era.Probably the first Pioneer of exploiting fielding restrictions.

Dude, they don't have to be in the same class for a parallel to exist.  Both a BMW and a Premier Padmini are still cars with 4 wheels.

Besides, Srikanth was good for what he was, but he was no Gavaskar/Zaheer Abbas/Viv Richards calibre player either.   Even OK players can play defining roles in big games.   And whether you want to accept it or not, this hack can play a crucial contribution in a dream scenario (albeit an unlikely one) playing out for Pak - like it it did against the choking Poms in the semi-Final.
