If England had some hot prospects to take his slot then boot him out . But they have no one and already have some rookies in team . Thus should carry on for a year more and assess then if form has slumped again and if newbies have stepped up

the presence of balllance ( picked as roots Yorkshire buddy ) in squad sums up back ups

Exactly,

have to back ur top players and dont talk about replacing them unless someone is really pushing them. BAck ur legends Cook in test, dhoni in Odi are legends.

Form varies, no 11 players can be intop form all time. If they are contributing in some way back them . All the legends in past have been backed.

M sure cook is also a great help to root with his captaincy .

How about rating Ishant on his last 20 tests.   Not saying he's a "champion" but at this point in his career, he's a value-add 3rd pacer, and has done quite decently in away tests over the last couple of years.

Ishant was rushed into international cricket before he was ready for it, and thrust into a lead pacer role when he never really was that good a bowler.   He's no longer as bad a bowler as his historical statistics imply.

there's no such thing as value add third pacer in RSA, AUS ENG. he might have improved but a bit but you have to compare him to another prospect with 10 years behind him. he has utterly wasted the Indian cap.

I see your point, but it's not like the guys he kept out of the side - Vinay  Kumar etc - were any better.  And Bottom line is that, you have to pick a guy on what he can do for you today, not what he did last year.

And I strongly disagree with you regarding the importance of the 3rd pacer. It's a massive difference if your 3rd steamer can sustain pressure instead of releasing it.  Test bowlers hunt in packs, and it's been a perennial problem for us to maintain pressure and incisiveness, after the first spells of the main quick (or 2) are done.

you misunderstood. the 3rd pacer is not a supporting role. he has to contribute with wickets, lots of them, on away tours.
