Joe Root v Cheteswar Pujara - who is better batsman in tests?

Both are great in home matches, haven't been same in away matches.

Fruit is still ahead. If Che repairs his record outside Asia, he'd be undisputed no.2 batsman in Tests.

Root....Root doesn’t get into a rut overseas and atleast gets the 50 more often than not....However Pujara has a great chance to overtake Root in the upcoming series and Pujara I personally think has a better temperament and ability on tough pitches.

Pujara is one good overseas series away from overtaking Root, I guess.

Root gives his wicket away too often. Pujara can bat and bad and bat. Proper batsman.

Pujara is 3 years elder to Root and also prone to injury woes thanks to his knees, so in the long term Root has a higher ceiling. Root is my favorite English player but this has been disappointing to see, where is the heart? If Che can do well in the coming 18 months he will be above Root else Root shades it by a thin margin as of now. It is incredible how good Che is on the Asian tracks, probably the best batsman in the world on Asian tracks ever since Younis Khan retired.

Pujara goes into shell when bowlers are on top.

This sort of stuff worked in 90's when you can scores at 2 RPO and still eek out draws or wins.

But times have changed, can't be in survival mode at all times.

Pujara faced lots of balls in Australia but had very few runs to show for it.

Dravid suffered from the same disease but he made up for those with daddy hundreds overseas.

I think Root is better than Che since he can defend/attack, and is more consistent. But the gap between them is marginal at the moment since they are both HTBs. As you said, Che is the best on Asian tracks now with YK retired.
