Umesh has bowled so well in this season, consistently picking up wickets but he has been down on pace bowling around 135kph to 144kph mostly, this is what worrying me the most :wp26:,  is he intentionally  bowling within himself?? Or has he seriously lost his pace coz of age?? want your views on it guys @Mosher @rkt.india @express bowling @Rightarmfast @Suhaan

He is almost 31. I don't think he will ever clock 152 kph like he did back in 2011. If he can bowl the way he is currently doing i think he has atleast two years as an Indian cricketer.

Umesh has been bowling at this pace for some time now. I think age has something to do with it because its not a drastic drop in pace. Happy with the way he has been bowling though.

i think Umesh can switch back to 145+ but i feel he is trying to ensure he maintains his line n length first ..so its just that he is becoming wiser and wants to maintain line n length and Pace...he has still been 136 to 145k...and has swung.

@MultiB48

Its his age. However, he hasnt lost as much of pace. He still bowled around 149 in the tournament. He will still bowl around 145. But whatever the loss in pace is, has got to do with age and also a little maturity in understanding his own self. No point banging it in and getting hit to the park. he has been remarkably consistent throughout the tournament, which is great.

Umesh has quite clearly lost his pace may be for his age or can be about maintaining line and length,be it for any reason ,he has lost pace ,he bowled at high 140s till ct 2017..this is a concern in six months time he may trundle around 135 just to be in a good channel,he has discovered bowling at this pace(or lesser) can get him control over his deliveries

Or maybe age has caught him

Umesh was bowling 137 k to 149 k in the 4 test series against Australia in early 2017...  and he was bowling really well too.  We were beginning to see a new Umesh who was combining high pace, reverse swing and decent accuracy.

The first signs of reduction in pace was seen in the ODI series against the WI in mid 2017.  Then on the SL tour that followed, he was still slower. And, it was not just loss of pace,  it was accompanied by bad bowling too.  He was looking so mojo-less that he lost his test spot in SA and wasn't among the top 4 test pacers. He lost his bowling rhythm.

Now, in this IPL, he is still bowling about 4 kph slower than early 2017 but is bowling  well with the new ball.  His line and bounce has improved with the new ball too.

I feel that this reduction in pace is partly due to age ...   partly due to loss of confidence after losing his test spot ( he wants to regain his test spot and does not want to bowl badly )  ...   and partly due to the the fact that his point of criticism has been lack of accuracy while his pace has been praised.

As his pace has always been praised, he does not feel the need to focus on it. This extra focus was not needed when he was on the right side of 30 but is needed for a 30 year old.

I am not sure this is the right approach.  Umesh's USP is pace and he looks very average if he bowls slower.

We may not realize this in T20s where it is much easier to bowl decent pace for 2 or 3 overs. His real test will be in test matches.

I want Umesh to focus on pace too.

@express bowling brother i have a huge concern about his pace ,I feel he is going to loose another yard of pace in six months time ,some would laugh though here, but when he does I would really appreciate people recall my this statement because the trend which his reduction of pace has shown is something which should be noted down ,his pace has gone down with significant rate, going by that I see further depreciation in his pace in six months time

He is human. Post the age of 28-29, your body changes. Its just a struggle to first not get muscle tears and Umesh hasnt had any of this. But no point worrying about his pace. He had his run. Now India needs to find a new bowler to replace Umesh in the next 1-2 yrs.

You got to look ahead. Like the Keymaster from Matrix would say, his purpose was showing the way in terms of pace. He has done it. Time for some youngster to raise his hand and take the mantle over.

Umesh is already replaced.  He did not find a place in any of the 3 formats on the last tour to SA ...  a country where even 5 pacers were played at the same time in a test match.  But we did really well as a bowling unit.

Even in terms of pace ... now it is Bumrah who bowled lots and lots of 144 k to 148 k balls in SA and has taken the mantle from Umesh in terms of being the speed leader.

And the pipeline looks good with Avesh, Nagarkoti, Mavi, Prasidh, Saini, Siraj, Khaleel etc.

But I will be happy if Umesh can bowl atleast 135 k to 145 k in test matches and bowl well for the next 2 years.

RAFbhai ...  I fully agree that the main purpose that Umesh Yadav served was making the world ( and upcoming Indian pacers and their coaches ) believe that Indians too can bowl really fast for 6+  years. ( in the speedgun era  ).

Srinath did too but lack of regular speed readings partially eclipsed his efforts.

What I meant more was, the selectors need to show faith and give the opportunity to the likes of Avesh, Khaleel, Nagarkotti, Mavi etc. I think Umesh would still bowl close to 145 atleast for a year or so.

The worrying part is that Avesh, Prasidh and Khaleel have got chances in so few FC matches till data.

Srinath, Zaheer, Shami and Bumrah all had sufficient FC experience before debuting in test matches.

Just like old Kapil and Manoj used to block Srinath's test spot for 2 years ... same thing is happening in Ranji teams.

i am disappointed with umesh but atleast it was a start ,hopefully future bowlers do better

Umesh has had a up and down career so far. Inconsistency has been his bane. Should have achieved a lot more with the potential that he had. Umesh's legacy is that he has showed that you can keep bowling fast by working on your strength and fitness and hopefully he will continue to do so for the next year or 2. With the way he has been bowling, hope he gets a chance in England. I am more disappointed with Aaron though. His career has gone downhill.

Nobody should be disappointed of Aaron or Umesh. They did nothing wrong. In a country, which doesnt have support its athlete, and in a team, which doesnt support fast bowlers, these two had the will to bowl fast no matter what.

Neither had any decent support, had no mentors to train them and had captains who were openly critical of them. Despite that the two bowled fast.

Apart from Shaun Tait who was often ridiculed by his own team members and commentators, I haven't come across any fast bowler who has had this tough.

Hats off to both of them. Everybody goes with the flow. These two went against the current and are still holding on. So don't say you are disappointed of them, my brother. These two are real champions.

RAF bhai I am talking as a fan of both bowlers. Frustrated maybe a better word I guess. I just want Aaron to be back in the Indian team soon. Have been his fan since he clocked 152k's and will continue to be a fan till he retires. Same with Umesh. Just sad to see where Aaron's career is going. Hoping he does well in county.

what change do you think he has made

His upper body stays straighter now, less side on. his bowling arm is now almost touches his right shoulder making his action more compact, leading to better balance when delivering the ball and head is not falling towards left. Arms are not all over the place, so less probability of things going wrong with action. His stretch reflex has probably reduced as he is less side on, which has resulted in reduced pace.

Contrary to that, I felt he is more side on now.

the main change is his bowling arm position which used to be around his right eye before now it is closer to right shoulder. His action has now seems more quick arm.
