At this time he was hitting the deck and going for seam movement and pace. In the 2nd session, the ball was swinging a lot, so he went for swing. He is not a proper swing bowler and never looks good when he floats the ball up. The same thing happened in the 2nd innings first spell. Shami looks good when he goes for pace. His reduced intensity in certain spells outside Asia has more to do wrong choice of bowling style than fitness. you could see it by the way he was running.

That' an odd thing to say - if swing isn't his style of play or he can't control swing then he wouldn't be in the top 3 picks for pace bowling in the starting 11, nor should he be.

Why ? A high percentage of top pacers in history were not conventional-swing bowlers primarily. They depended mainly on pace, bounce, seam movement or reverse swing and accuracy. Everyone swings the ball in very favourable conditions but that does not make them swing bowlers.

I'm not saying that, I'm talking about the inability to control swing. If the second innings is any indication, he shouldn't be in the top 3 bowling slot, as you cannot waste such conditions if you can't control the movement especially in England. Being a senior pro he should've been able to do that, alas but I guess our best chance at Lords is if Stokes doesn't play and the wicket is dry. Edited August 5, 2018 by R!TTER

I got it when i was below 18 and needed to get a license. It used to be no big deal earlier to get licenses with fake DOB's express bowling 1

That was exactly my point, wear n tear, age or whatever it is, at 36 any pacer would loose his pace but shami is still bowling at 137-146k same speeds which he bowled 2-3 years ago that means he is not a 36 as claimed by his wife. express bowling, UrmiSinhaRay and Rightarmfast 2 1

I have watched him bowl even before he debuted for India and ever since. What happens is that ... when he goes for conventional swing, his pace reduces a bit. He is not a big swinger of the ball ... so slower pace and a bit of swing does not help. Shami is at his best when he bowls at full speed and hits the deck often enough. Then you will see him get consistent seam movement both ways and small swing both ways too at high pace. And some bounce. All this produces wickets regularly like we saw in the first innings of this test and in the last test in South Africa. He won't waste the conditions when he is bowling fast ... because England is conducive to consistent seam movement too.
Nikhil_cric Posted August 5, 2018 Posted August 5, 2018 He doesn't look like he's going to last a 5 test series anyway and he's pretty ineffective at reduced pace because of his lack of height. UrmiSinhaRay 1

He had 3 or 4 good spells and 2x as many bad ones. Is he really unfit or near the end of the road?

zen Posted August 5, 2018 Posted August 5, 2018 (edited) No matter what Shami’s age is, I do not expect him to last for more than 2 years. He appears to be on the last leg of his career considering his fitness level .... Needs to work on his fitness Edited August 5, 2018 by zen UrmiSinhaRay and velu 1 1

MechEng Posted August 5, 2018 Posted August 5, 2018 36 year old Wasim Akram bowled at an average speed of 136 kph and topped at 144 kph in 2003 World Cup, and this with a very economical run up. Bowling speeds need not be age dependent always, but fitness definitely is. UrmiSinhaRay 1
