I'd play Vihari in allrounder's role. Ask him to bowl a discipline line and length and not experiment much, just steady work horse to support Kuldeep.

I am not sure Rahul will get to start looking at his form and Rahane doesnt deserve a place in the side in my opinion.In so far as bowling is concerned, I would have loved to see someone like Siraj in the squad in place of Bhuvi and also in the XI. I wanted to make place for Umesh as well, may be ahead of Shami.

Not a rocket science to drop Ashwin ,umteenth time he will be picked in SENA and as usual will fail only to spoil his cv.

Tried and tested failure can't be tried once more,have kuldeep he gives you genuine wicket taking option

Aussies will find it hard to tackle him

Our seamers whether it be Ishant,Shami,Umesh or Bhuvi have done nothing of note in Australia as of now.Even Bumrah who has been successful as of now have played on really juicy pitches as of now.That being the case it  is almost guaranteed that seamers all of a sudden  would  not become great as a group on that flat pitches in AUS. That being the case, my sense tells that 1 seamer   Bumrah  is enough. Bhuvi,Jadeja,Ashwin,Kuldeep,Vihari  all need to play.  These players, as a bowling group can do no worse than what if 4 specialist seamers are playing. They can score vital runs too. Most of them being spinners, can keep themselves comparatively fresh for longer periods too. So Bumrah,Bhuvi are enough as seamers.

Unless Vijay and Rahane score in the practice match, they should not be in the 11. 5th bowler/all rounder choice between Ashwin, Jadeja and Bhuvi. Considering Adelaide, better to go with a swing bowler as spinners have not done much at Adelaide.

 

No Karn Sharma type experiments in the first test please. Go with the last bowling combo we had in England.

1) Prithvi Shaw

        I was almost certain about backing M.Vijay as he had a good Australia tour in 2014, but I feel Australia is one place where the pitches will suit Shaw perfectly. As a strokemaker who loves bounce and carry in the wicket, he may prove to be the X factor we missed in England. Also I feel, like how Krunal and Khaleel have been backed by the management in the LOI's,  Shaw will be given a long rope. This might just release some pressure off an youngster, as he will know the team backs him.

 

2) K.L Rahul

      Again its 50:50 between M.Vijay/ Rahul but Vijay have been given many chances before. Rahul being the younger and more talented one, I feel he should be persisted with. Atleast for the first 2 tests. If he fails to deliver, his place may be up for grabs after this series.

 

3) Cheteshwar Pujara

4) Virat Kohli

5) Ajinkya Rahane

    Perhaps our best bat in away conditions after Kohli. Needs to be given chances in Australia ahead of Sharma anyway looking at their past performances in OZ land in 2014.

 

Now comes the tricky part. Adelaide will be a flat deck. As its not a day night test, evening swing under lights is not an issue. Hence we might need the extra bowler. I know many ICFers will choose Rohit over Rahul/ Shaw but I feel Adelaide is not the place to be selecting him. Also, as Pandya is injured and Jadeja will hardly bring anything to the table (1 spinner is enough at Adelaide), I think we need 5 genuine bowlers.

 

6) Rishabh Pant

 

7) Bhubaneshwar Kumar  

      He might not be effective after the new ball spell as in Australia you need hit the deck bowers, but we need his batting given we are a batsman short and without a genuine allrounder.

 

8) Kuldeep Yadav

    Leg spinners have always been more effective in Australia than Offies. Be it McGill, Warne or Kumble. He has also been on top of the Aussies in the T20 series. He is must in Adelaide.

 

9) Ishant Sharma

    This could be the series that defines his career. Has been a constant performer for us in the last 3 years. Even in England, he bowled well. He has the ability to bowl the back of a length ball most suited to Aussie pitches.

 

10) Moh. Shami

   I will prefer him above Yadav. Yadav has improved a lot and might get a game at Perth or MCG but upfront, Shami should be given the go ahead. Also, as Bhuvi is in the XI (not much effective with the old ball), Shami might balance it out with his reverse swing and yorkers with the older ball.

 

11) Jaspreet Bumrah

   Perhaps the only bowler to have a sure shot selection at Adelaide.

 

     The above might be controversial with many ICFers as I have selected 5 batsmen, 1 wk and 5 bowelers but the thing is , we don't have an all rounder. Heck, not even a batsman who can bowl (like Sachin/ Ganguly/ Yuvi). Also, traditionally our batters have performed well in Australia but we always struggled to pick up 20 wickets. 5 bowlers is a must this time. If 5 genuine batters can't score 350, neither will the 6th batsman.

Exactly my thoughts. Only would play ashwin instead of Kuldeep just for the batting. I think we should revert our strategy to batting long and deep. Something that we were not doing in a very long time. Aus would any case be a high scoring series. Only way to win is consistently scoring 400 and 500

The current bowling unit is bowling differently in the last 2-3 years, even away from home. We saw that in Eng and SA. Yes those were favorable bowling conditions but our pacers maintained the consistency, intensity and aggression through out the series. Expect them to continue that form in Aus as well unless Aussies prepare flat highways, which to me looks highly unlikely. Out and out bowling wickets will give Aussies the best chance.

if we go thru the series wise records of seam  bowlers in  concerned  SA & ENG  series we can see that  SA was so much bowler friendly.

There Umesh didn't play. In ENG series, Umesh played only 1 test.Shami was waste with around  39 avg: Bhuvi didn't play in ENG.

Ishant was good in ENG.

 

So all in all Umesh who played in only 1 test is not at all convincing. Shami's success can be attributed to bowler friendly SAF wkts and hence not convincing at all .

 

So in addition to Bumrah & Bhuvi(who can contribute some runs with the bat) , Ishant can perhaps  be played.

why??? just because a few players were involved in an exercise that has been going on for decades and got banned, all of a sudden Aussies' interest in the sport went down a lot???
