Sure Rohit might score the same as Pandya and Pandya has the added advantage of bowling a few overs. Agreed.

However Pandya can at best contribute here and there if he doesn’t totally  fail but Rohit can be a one man army, A one man swat team/stealth fighter than can win the game on his own on his day.

High risk high reward.

Anyway time is running out. This should be his last shot.

One man suicide squad to be exact!

Exactly. Not a fan of HP, but he has more to offer than 2-minutes-Maggi-in-SENA No.hit Sharma

Australia have made one change to their XI for the third Domain Test, with Mitchell Marsh called in for Peter Handscomb.

Skipper Tim Paine revealed his side for the Boxing Day Test following Australia’s Christmas morning training session at the MCG.

Meanwhile India have suffered a blow with team management confirming spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has not fully recovered from an abdominal strain and won't be available for the MCG Test, with the BCCI also confirming their XI.

Mayank Agarwal will make his debut, while openers KL Rahul and Murali Vijay have both been axed.

Australia XI: Aaron Finch, Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine ©, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

India XI: Virat Kohli ©, Ajinkya Rahane, Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah

Should have selected Pandya instead of Rohit

I can't understand why we refuse to play more all rounders in such dire times. And what is Kohli's problem with Kuldeep?

Win or lose this TM is taking Indian cricket backwards. Where we are heading towards it will take another 5 years just to get into the right track.

Excess amount of cricket and gym culture has hit the skill aspect of the game. I remember in Gavaskar's time, players ran around the ground some 2 to 5 laps for batsmen and more for bowlers, remaining time was spent in nets.

Now it's all specialized diets, fitness and etc. Sure it helps them to take the workload of excess cricket but drains away all soul from the game.

People forget that cricket is a skill centered sport, not much athleticism based and this is especially true for the longer format. Look at the standard of catching these days, both behind the stumps and in close-in positions. Even outfield catches are dropped with alarming frequency. In the quest to improve ground fielding and effecting run outs the art of catching has suffered massively, applies not just to India.

To be frank , professionalism and increased importance of Fitness hasn't taken away the soul of the game IMO.
I think it is more on the failure of Cricketing bodies to prioritize skill and make the sport entertaining apart from marketing it as a religion in the sub continent and putting in some Bollywood bullshit.

I will be very harsh here though despite being a fan and ex player - cricket is too tough, spectator unfriendly and complex with ginormous number of rules, not to mention the cost barrier required to access the game.
I have had acquitances in foreign non -cricketing countries and the mention of cricket itself brings a big exclamation - OMG , the game that goes for *ing 5 days !!!

If you think professionalism is ruining cricket, then blame it on people who are in charge of the system .
Better organisation actually reaps results - look at India U19/A team systems under Dravid.
You need people like Dravid/Tom Moody at helm with all powers given to the good meaning people and not people like Shastri or Bewda who rate people based on their social media buzz.

I agree with you on the rest, but for the first para, the soul part - cricket is actually meant to be a slow complex game, it's literally chess on a sports ground. Yes fitness is important otherwise it is not possible to survive the brutal schedule, but then those lengthy contests where a bowler would test off stump awareness of a batsman have gone, Shikhar Dhawan makes a run off the mill outswinger look like ball of the century, he's far fitter than cricketers of the past but skill wise quite behind.

Its the right decision to drop Rahul even  though he is more talented than Mayank, infact he should be dropped from all formats and made to work on his basics which are ruined by T20 and IPL.
