Moeen Ali-Adil Rashid in 2019 WC vs Ashwin-Jadeja in 2017 CT

Ali and Rashid have hurt Eng the same way Ashwin and Jadeja hurt us in the 2017 WC. Look not threatening at all and have let opposition bat through the middle overs totally content with being defensive. 

 

Their failure has had a major role in England's sudden decline in this tournament. Irrespective of the results from now on, England should look beyond these two after the WC.

 

Was shocked to read Ali's stats - batting average of 25 and bowling average of nearly 50! Yet he keeps getting pick match after match as if there is a quota system in England. Rashid has still done okay, expensive but kept taking wickets before the WC>

The bowling unit are not great especially the spinners but this all conquering batting line up was going to win the WC for them , if batting first, bat the opposition out of  the game and if second chase any total posted . Hahahaha 

 

My guess now is Moeen Ali will open the batting

But its their batting thats hurting them . Its mostly seamers that are doing well for most teams until now . May be now spinners might come in play as pitches are used again

England fast bowlers have been disappointing. They have leaked runs left and right in every game, right from the start of their home summer where they played Pakistan. With all the hype around Jofra Archer, their bowlers have only looked good in patches. 

 

Broad and Anderson would have done a much better job than some of these current guys. Reason I say this is because current England bowling attack has pace, but they look all one dimensional. You always need variety in the attack like how India and Australia have with Bhuvi and Shami as different options aiding to Bumrah and Cummins/Behrendoff with Starc. England is all about pace and not much different.

Ali was always their "bonus" player for a long time in ODIs. He is not a proper batsman in this format (partly because he comes in too late) and he is a glorified part-timer who nevertheless bowls 7-8 overs every match. the reason they don't want to drop him for a pure spinner is because: (i) they don't have many alternatives, and (ii) they want to brag about having batting till 10 or 11. I'd have long discarded ali in ODIs and brought in either some young promising wrist spinner or a solid List A player like Liam Dawson.
