Likely because he's coming back into int'l cricket after a while and did not get a good look in the first innings.  No reason to panic yet.  They'd better not drop Agarwal after everything he did to save them the blushes in Australia.  How about his XI:

make no mistake, that time  Rahane deserved his spot rightly. He had a  great record in SENA.  But by the last AUS series, it was evident that he had regressed beyond repair.Now it is time to move on from him. Instead these morons are persisting with him.

Why would you make that kind of a judgment about a player who had scored 96 at Durban,  118 in NZ, 100 at Lord's, 140 odd in Australia, 100 at Galle, twin 100s at Delhi in first 2-3 years of his test career and was averaging 50+. Each of those knocks was a top class innings

but he did play a damn good knock in 3rd test when it was a damn tough wkts which helped us won the game. Playing rohit ahead of rahane is never justified overseas specially SA which is rohit weakest opponent n rahane's strongest

Just saw the scorecards of Aus series. KLR is horrible. It is amazing he is getting so many chances. Played first two tests, He was dropped in 3rd test, still played 4th and failed when India put 600. If he plays here, he is very lucky. Decent WC spoilt him as well, he is not even considered for ODIs/T20Is now.

If Aggarwal doesn't play ahead of some of the guys, then its absolute bull. He came to the test side in Boxing day test at the biggest of stages in the long format and that too with series on the line and he performed like a Champion player against Aussie attack which were bowling really well. He deserves the opening spot for few series now.

A logic which I don't agree with. England was also Rahane's favorite opponent , when Rahane scored a hundred in Lord's. in 2014. And We all know what happened in England in 2018. Australia was also Rahane's favorite opponent, in 2014-15 , when he was smashing Johnson all over the park. But what happened to him in 2018-19 tour of Australia? The fact is Rahane is a headless chicken, who had a purple patch in 2013-15 and has been getting exposed after that. Further, I have  not seen any indian batsman as incompetent as him, while handling spin.

Not england but Sa has been his fav....be it their away or home, test ior ODI rahane always does well against SA 

Again Aus was also not his fav opponent

Even if Rahane is good  against SA, you can't blame captain/coach for not selecting a player, who is only good against one particular opponent.

 

I have seen yuvraj Singh in his early days. He was never a good test player to begin with . Yuvraj was never a test specialist but Rahane is considered as one.  Also yuvraj has smashed hattrick sixes to Ajmal. Whereas, Rahane struggled against any gully danda spinners. Rahane batting against spin is a disgrace to rich batting heritage of Mumbai.

yuvraj smashed ajmal for sixes around 2013, after 2006 his game against spin bowling improved a lot but against white ball we didnt knw how he wud have been against spin with red ball
