Shubman Gill needs to be tried in test matches and ODIs

Recommended Posts

Chances are slim he'll get into the playing XI this series. That may bot be such a bad thing. In my book, he is a good #3 or #5  prospect. He will have to wait till India tour tougher countries to make a case.

I hope he breaks into the ODI XI soon though. Maybe at #4 or #5. Shreyas Iyer deserves a long run though (not entirely convinced of his game against short pitched bowling though).

Ist Unofficial Test on tour to New Zealand

Gill

1st innings ...  83 runs off just 83 balls in tough seaming batting conditions when the team folded for just 216. Played a fighting and big knock when the going was tough  !

2nd innings ... 204 not out off just 279 balls ... when the pitch became flatter, he made full use of the conditions.

This is the kind of player we need.

it was also good to see vihari among runs in both 1st and 2nd innings. these 2 were clearly a cut above rest

Gill shud aim for position 3 n 4 in ODI  and in test 3-6

i like him in middle order , he is an elegant free flowing batsman and such batsman shud be saved from new ball which is openers job. This is most best batsman of every team bats at 4 in test . Not that he cant open but he ll have more fun in middle

But whom will they drop considering we need 5 proper bowler on these flat pitches.
Mayank Rohit Kohli Chepu Rahane are certain.
Rohit shouldn't have been asked to open in India. Now you have done that, have to give him 2 matches abroad also.
Otherwise his fanatic PRs  and media will cry at full throttle.
Can't see Gill getting a game here unless an injury to some one..

People are so impatient, these things generally work themselves out, if Rohit is injured and cannot play.Gill will open in first test.

Why was Rohit selected to open in tests in the first place, knowing that he has major issues against the moving ball and has a weak off-stump game. !!

Time and again we have seen HTBs being chosen in tests at home and chucked out after failures in SENA. Most recent example before Rohit was Dhawan.

This does not allow the potential all condition batsman to get settled before tough away tours.

Let Gill continue to be in the test squad.

Rohit deserved his place and he proved his worth too.Stop mixing things. This was last chance Rohit was getting and he also knew it.

You don't select players based just on potential  to do well in away series.Second you always exhaust chances given to older players first then turn to young players. You always give debut to a young player a series late and kick older players out a series earlier.

Once Gill is in the team there is no going back to Rohit Sharma.

Deserved his place as a test opener based on what ??

Did he show any improvement in tackling the moving ball or did he show any improvement in his off stump game against pace before getting his chances as a test opener  ????

In the pink ball test, when the ball was moving a tad, he looked as clueless as ever even against a sub-par pace attack.

And in one of the T20s, when Southee was getting a bit of swing, he kept edging the ball till he got out.

Whether you choose Gill or not  ... choose someone as a test opener who has a good off-stump game against pace.  And Rohit is not that guy.

He deserved place based on his form, just Rahul got his place in world cup based on his IPL performance.

Sehwag never knew where his offstump was thruout his career. It does not mean he could not score runs every player has his strengths and weaknesses.Rohit is experienced enough to handle international bowling. If he failed he would been gone anyways.I don't blame TM one bit for trying to cash in on his form.

As said earlier if Rohit is out Gill would be my opener in first test.

So you are choosing test openers based in ODI form !!

There is nothing more to say to these kind of things.

Huh !!

Sehwag had a fantastic idea about his off stump.

His playing style was flashy ... and that is another issue.

Everyone knows that you don't blame the TM, no matter what the issue is.

Hain ??? kya ??

No batsman can score runs if they dont knw where their off stump is

Rahul was always 3rd opener coz at that time he was scoring in t20 n test ....he was in ODI squad before that bad year also.

Nyways from t20 to odi is understandable but from ODI to test isnt

You choose player based on form.labuschagne was chosen to odi squad based on his test form.Kohli got into test team based on his odi exploits.

Sehwag never had any idea about his offstump. He did not get out just due his flashy strokes alone. As he progressed in his career he became more and more insecure about his defence too.Why go to Sehwag even Kohli is unsure where his offstump even now.

Rohit Sharma would have been on par with Sehwag in Asian conditions also avg wise if he had played enough matches.

I blame TM for not selecting Iyer in the world cup that might have cost India the world cup. I don't go about blaming any captain and TM without any valid reason either.

2nd Unofficial Test vs NZ

Gill opens the innings

And batting 107 off just 153 balls at the end of day 3.

he has crossed merchant in terms of FC average. next only to bradman. and yet does not get a spot in the Ind team. so, I am assuming that we have a top 6, all of whom are near-bradman.
