Top on that list for me is KLR....

I have been following this guy from ...may be .... 2012 or 13..... Rahul Dravid has high praise for him.....he was technically correct player just like his favourite Dravid and was very slow S/R....

I was very excited when he got his first hundred in Australia.....IPL has totally screwed his technique...

Manish Pandey.........

I still remeber his first hundred in the ipl match....he painted offside with incredible strokes....every stroke was so pleasing on the eyes....

Now he became a hack ......mostly trying to slog on the offside

Faf....

I was so surprised to see his stance and shot making on the recent test match against England.......somehow, he is playing like a tail end batsmen trying hard to bludgeon the ball...

Other??

he dint win a single t20 wc since he started playing ipl.

It also took him a decade to play a good intl t20 innings. His best innings in t20 came before IPL in the 2007 world T20 SF against Australia.

Don't think Rahul had a good FC average like Shaw, Gill who averaged above 60 in FC. His batting technique  in long format was never as good as Shaw, Gill, Rahane

first thing Gill avg is 57 in domestic

n KL avg 58 in domestic

Now his technique was excellent -

  • it started changing for white ball but still was good
  • Some issues started coming in as he found this new power game ...slowly bat shape started to go very slant and he started edging a lot more
  • Then insecurity in team created self doubt and hence it showed in footwork. While batting u have less then a sec and u cant have two minds which is what happened to him. He wasnt sure to go on front n back
  • Runs started drying up n confidence went

We make such big deal about as if he didnt knw how to bat, in bad form this happens to every one. Like purple patch there is bad patch also in which u cant do any right. The guy has 100 in Aus, ENG, WI and u cant do that without good technique ...in before u take sehwag name he also had a good technique. Technique is mostly about balance and sehwag had great balance rest after a lot is about mindset. KL use to have one of the best technique. 1-2 bad yrs doesnt make that wrong even someone like rahane recently had it who himself has a very good technique

Watch this video ull understand better, n if u cud find that duleep trophy 100 watch how good his technique was

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFXdf36J3H4

even watch his 1st 100 highlights....he had very good technique and still has just have to have clear mind n confidence. Cluttered mind will never allow u to decide to either go on front or back foot . Its getting better and as he ll keep getting more runs it ll become better n better and he ll be at his attacking best when he ll have security of his place

Why do u think all these Ex cricketer go ga ga over him- He is one of the best talents India have produced and 1,2 bad years cant take away the talent. Everyone will go through this . For some like Sachin or kohli the bad patch may not last this long but most players do go through this and TM made it worse

Doesn't matter how many ex players praise him. What matters is how many times he scored in tests. Dhoni is talked more positively than any cricketer now by ex cricketers, should we play him by your logic ? Nothing but runs matter.

Anyone who looks to have a superb test average needs to show lot of patience, avoid edges, avoid missing the ball and hit it away from fielder or at non catchable height. To score big hundreds one needs huge appetite for double hundreds. Sehwag was an exception. A lot of guys now play Test as if they are playing T20. Off course there are rare positives like Warner scores 100 in one and half session but then there are negatives like poor averages of Rahul and many other batsmen. Guys like Shaw, Mayank are already averaging above 50 in tests. Only to e will tell how Gill does in tests. Our team has many players who are averaging above 50 (Shaw, Agarwal, Pujara, Kohli). The standards of batsmanship in Indian test team are very high. Averaging 34 is very pathetic in this context. We have shown we can produce a lot of players averaging above 50, then why to accept someone with test average of 34 ? I would try Gill as I feel he is someone who can match the standards that are set by our batsmen in test averages.

He gets that for his contribution for years

In bad form all this goes for a top

mayank debut in his purple patch and rahul is yet to hit one

In WI n AUS 1st tour Rahul had 100, mayank didnt....mayank is yet to go to SA n ENG which affected rahul avg

u cant compare two so early...let 2 play similar amount of games in similar challenges. Even kambli avg so good when he started and we all know how it ended. Comparison shud be kept for a huge sample size. Shaw has only played against Wi at home .

Also do u think  shaw, mayank wont have bad patch ever ?

Abdv avg similar at that point

all it takes is one good or one bad year to affect avg

Coz he has made quality runs and can do that again....bad patch can happen to every

Gill shud be ahead of him in line but Rahul shud be in picture for sure

How are you sure Rahul has not yet hit bad patch or that he will never hit bad patch again to bring his average down the next time it rises by few points due to good patch. Good patch and bad patch discussions are all hypothetical as we don't know how much time each patch would last. His average of 34 may either improve , might stay almost same or might fall further as he plays more. The fact is how he has averaged so far. Yes potentials are something which need to be considered while analysing a player but I feel he is more miss than hit in Test cricket. Having grown up watching players like Boycott, Sunny, Crowe, Richards, Greg Chapell, Sobers, Miandad, Grenidge, Lara, Sachin, Sehwag, Kallis, Pointing, Cook, Clarke, Amla, Pujara, Dravid, Kohli and few more I have high expectations of averages from test batsmen. I would rather let someone else but the idea that he is a good test

batsman.

There is nothing which suggests to me that the he is one of the best. All media hype and hoopla of saying he's the best of this generation, when the records actually suggests he is the worst averaging test batsman in this team. Let him score huge runs to cover up his pathetic test average. We can then praise him deservedly. At this point of time praising him is just praising an pathetically performing test batsman

What happ was a bad patch

What is bad patch - when u cant decide either to go on front or back foot, when luck runs out, confidence goes down , u start edging everything.

His bad patch is gone...it can come again but may be at end of career

No its real ask any cricketer.

Yup he was but early part in career most are like that ....infact he n kohli had same avg till a long point

but then bad patch

Atleast he hit 100s on good days thats what i look at. Scoring a 100 in England that to when ur going through rough patch shows he has quality. When virat had his 1st off series in england he cudnt make a 50

so this topic shud be kept aside till he gets a chance again

Careers shud be judged at the end

Only injuries to 2  out of 3 (one of Shaw, Agarwal, Sharma) will help him get a spot in playing 11. Also Gill is a competitor to him if team management is looking for a player about 5 years younger than Rahul.

An Indian test batsman averaging 34  and still getting chance is rare in this era. It used to happen a lot in 1870's. We now have more count of  cricketers averaging over 50 now.  The Indian test batting standard now is better than 1970's.

Now it will need others to get injured, luck or failure of other batsmen who have scores more runs than him to go through a bad patch. His selection now is at mercy of factors which are out of his control. The factor which was under his control (to score and demand a place) has not been realized.

Rahul needs to place the bowl well. Against WI he got out giving a catch to keeper down the leg side, a ball that most batsmen would have hit for 4 at long leg. In one innings he tried to sweep a ball bowled by Chase and totally missed getting any aprt of bat on the ball, only to see stumps getting rattled. These were his two dismissals in first test against WI. In Second test bowlers exploited his weakness by bowling channel bowls, edging to the fielders behind the stumps. Hope the batting coach tells him his technical mistakes by watching his dismissals. Rahul needs to improve his technique on few aspects which he is not good at as he has lost his wicket to some ordinary bowling.
