What is the point in giving a player like Gill on and off chances, he will lose his confidence.Pandey can be sat down next match if they want to go with a sixth bowler.

You don't pick a young player unless you can give him sustained run.Not playing Gill is the right call.

If someone is good you give chance. period. Use or useless. You have to give chances to everyone who is likely to make it big for India in the f uture. Sooner you give is the better. These are home games. They play on good batting surfaces. The series is just a pointless series where they have invited Australia just for one day series. So nothing to lose. Why would he lose confidence playing these matches and failing. He could lose confidence any time in his career.

No , how can it be better than him leading India A in NZ where he will get used to the conditions and be preprared for Indian test and odi tours in NZ.

Here he might have played one match or two matches that too at no 6, Pandey is playing because Pant got hurt.

Yeah, sure, Dhawan  can crack jokes at Pant's expense and at his concussion, all these 'fans' can too, now that he's playing off KL against Pant.  I didn't see Dhawan laughing when he sensed KL breathing down his neck and threatening his spot. Jerk.

I though you where saying players should be able to perform irrespective of continuity . Isn’t Gill opening these days ?  Dhawan and Rohit cannot be touched according to you , so where is he going to play in NZ ?

I am not talking about one off chance. I am talking about having him bat at no.5  Iyer at no.6

That is the bloody job of Captain Fool. But all he is interested in is ensuring he and his friends bat in top 3, everything else is almost immaterial

Captain's job is not to hand over playing spots over perfectly good players, only fools  think that he needs to give chances to every tom dick and harry.

KL is twice the keeper Pant is at the moment. Pant needs to improve a lot if he wants to play in the LOIs ahead of Rahul as the keeper. He needs to work very hard and prove to the TM he deserves to be in the X1 as a keeper as well as a batsman. Rahul is ahead on both counts at the moment and Virat isn't going to change that combination at least in T20Is very soon.

KL also is not reinventing a wheel. There have been players who have done this in white ball formats. QDK does it for SA, Gilly did it for Australia and Kalu did it for Sri Lanka, Keeping the wickets and then opening the batting. As long as KL is happy doing that he will be the first choice keeper for the LO formats, unless he loses his batting form badly. Also since this additional ability gives KL more insurance in the playing X1, it is hard to see him giving up that role that easily.

We don't need KL opening in ODIs anyways as Shaw, Gill, Rohit, Dhawan et all are available to do that.
