Straight Drive Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Have watched the captaincy of Pataudi, Sunny, Kapil, Azhar, Tendulkar, Dravid, Ganguly, Dhoni and Kohli. Pataudi was a good tactician who worked with limited resources. Kapil won WC in 1983 as a captain which compensates his other captaincy issues. Dhoni too has won world level tournaments. Kohli needs to step up as a captain and win some major trophy.

Rahul is not in test playing 11 if Agarwal, Sharma and Shaw are fit. So workload wise he can take the load in LOI of keeper batsman. The concern here is quality though.
Global.Baba Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Dhoni inherited a made team Under Dhoni Top 6 were never even in question. 2-3 bowlers had a guaranteed start and we did not have riches in the fast bowling department. All available names played. Kohli's problem is too many contenders for available slots and a lot of capable bowlers. Only problem is he has failed to manage this and take brave calls. Vk1 1

Every captain inherits players Ganguly - dravid, kumble, sachin, srinath , even laxman , bhajji didnt make debut under ganguly Dhoni build a whole new team & core after 2011 - Dhawan, rohit, kohli, rahul, jadhav, pandya, bumrah, shami, bhuvi , ashwin, jadeja, umesh , rahane, pujara all debut under dhoni n virat inherited them..... virat failure is he has failed to settle new players under him
Vk1 Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 To be fair to Kohli we are seeing too much of cricket being played and too many injuries/ rests happening. Dhoni could play the same top 6 as all of them were fit most of the time.

Every captain has to go through injury issues with team Sachin injury issue has been going since 2000 Zak, nehra was constantly injured Then trend of balaji, pathan, sree, rp all these guys getting injured loosing form Yuvraj singh also started having injury issues post 2006 CT Kohli luckily has a pool that no one ever had . India can currently put 3 teams n every team wud challenge top most team of the world

India can currently put 3 teams n every team wud challenge top most team of the world I was referring to the batsman.. there is no guarantee that our top 6 will play continuously even a single series.. either Hardik or Dhawan or Rohit or Rahul or someone else will miss out owing to injuries or rest.
Vk1 Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Our top 6 has mostly been constant since 2005 ever since Yuvi, dhoni and Raina joined the team and until 2011.. in between Yuvi , Raina went out but came back quickly.. that's not the case anymore..b
Laaloo Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Jaddu and ishant certainly had clarity. keep sucking for years and years and you will keep getting chances and if you are willing to jump off the 23rd floor for me, then more points for you..
cricketpitch Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Sehwag is right. There was a reason India lacked clarity during the 2019 WC. We gave Rayudu so many games and decided to drop him for Vijay Shankar. Gave Shankar few chances and he is nowhere to be seen. Muddled selections and lack of clarity is killing our team combination and consistency. We need to identify a pool of players and give them a decent run in the team. I don't want to comment on how Dhoni did things as it is irrelevant now, we need to make sure that we don't lose these talented youngsters. The yardstick has to be the same for every one.

Sorry why did you miss Rohit Sharma in that list`? Sharma averaged 27-28 in his first 80 ODI's before Dhoni moved him to open in 2013. Sometimes you stick with players on and off if you think they are good. Jadeja has become the fastest left arm bowler to get to 200 Test wickets and Ishant has been one of the best bowlers in the world over the last few years. They have done well.

India can currently put 3 teams n every team wud challenge top most team of the world Having too many choices has made Kohli to be very impatient as well. India tried too many players at number 4 before the world cup and eventually in the semi-finals we decided to play 3 wicket keepers in the X1, that's how confused the management was. If Rayudu was your choice for 30 odd games, he should have been in the WC, period. Just two knocks of 45 each got Vijay Shankar that role and after couple of failures and injury, he isn't in the picture as well. I am sure if Iyer has a poor New Zealand tour, we will not see him for a while in the team. That's how fickle the management has been. You are never going to find the next gen of players if you are not patient with them. Dhawan & Rohit aren't going to play forever. sergio04 1

It is like giving Srikkanth credit for Sachin. He also had his likes and dislikes. Sreeshanth was one of his victims. Could have backed Uthappa a lot more, Gambhir had atleast 2-3 years left in him, Ignored Umesh a lot etc. Anyways not nitpicking and I am agreeing with Sehwag when he says Dhoni was a better man-manager than Virat. Virat comes across as someone who wants readymade players. All the fast bowlers in tests have matured and peaked at the same time and this has coincided with Kohli's captaincy. Now while some of their peak might have been lost under Dhoni who believed spin is king, Virat has a different philosophy to go with pace. Look man to man every captain has their pros and cons. There are a lot of good things in Virat's captaincy too however on this point I am with Sehwag. Edited January 21, 2020 by Global.Baba

However credit where due for Jadeja to perform and not taking anything away from his success. Don't you think Dhoni's favoritism might have gotten him that spot? This is the same guy who got opportunity after opportunity in white ball despite sucking. He was in the right place and benefitted from the backing of the right guy. Don't you think some deserving spinners who were toiling in domestics might have bennifited from this backing? Edited January 21, 2020 by Global.Baba

That has been there in every era. Jadeja got few chances at the start when he was hyped to the moon by everyone after some success with RR in IPL. He was absolutely poor during that time. I remember him getting hammered in the T20 WC in 2010 (I think?) and was dropped for a while. After he came back he was a better bowler. I remember there was a time when the Indian fans felt he should be India's main spinner overseas in Tests. Jadeja was for a period very good in all formats. I am still not convinced with him in the white ball format now and want Shreyas Gopal or Gowtham to be in his place. Dhoni backed Jadeja when he was at his peak in the while ball cricket but Kohli has brought him back when he has nothing to offer in shorter format with the ball just for his batting alone. Backing the players at the right time is very important.

If we give so much weightege to feilding than kohli along with few other indian player should drop themselves the way they drop catches in test matches. Very true. Also His batting was always going to go downhill considering his footwork was terrible. You can only play like him for so long ... age catches up. Hand/eye coordination deteoriates, if you don't have proper footwork to begin with, was never going to be easy in international cricket. raki05 1
