Should Rohit be given LOI captaincy?

One complication is that it can be difficult to have Kohli under Rohit in LOIs and vice versa in Tests .... if Rohit has to be the LOI captain, he has to quit tests (like Morgan for Eng, who is focused on the shorter formats)

At least in T20s, Rohit should take over captaincy. He comes across as more shrewd and patient with youngsters

I think the difference is that Kohli has never put a wrong foot forward as a player since his debut. Maybe for a brief time in tests in 2011 but even then was not totally discarded and was just waiting to break into the line up that had the  fab 5.

Rohit on the other hand saw a lot of stops and starts and setbacks and he did get good backing from Captain and team management who saw his potential.

That may have shaped up their thinking as captains.

Dhoni as well, for a guy who came from a backward region (in terms of cricket) knows the value of a talented player being ignored.

I am not saying Kohli is a bad guy here but as I said he just improved and grew with every game it’s incredible and is an inspiration but however I don’t think he has the empathy  to think from the other persons perspective like the other 2.

Obviously in a perfect world if every one is a Kohli Then we won’t need any mentors/managers/leaders.

I think two t20 worldcup should be enough to know what virat is capable of as captain. If he fails in both then maybe move on to rohit or someone younger for 2023 wc.

One shud be enough anyways we have seen enough of his captaincy in IPL. If he fails this this t20 wc then shud be handed over t20 2021 n odi 2023 wc captaincy so atleast he has 2 years to build side acc to him

Rohit understand that no 2 players are same and everyone takes their time some perform early some take time. He has seen his n virat graph as both went upward in a diff way. A player like him or even rahul wud understand how a player feels when things are not going right for him. Rohit was the 1st one to talk about insecurity in team n back openly pant when coach n captain gave negative statements about him. If mumbai indians have developed so many youngsters surely captain wud have a huge role in it.

Kohli on other hand is very impatient which is why his captaincy isnt same in LOI ....he lets his emotion take over his thinking and it effects his instincts, team selection , body languages everything. Thats why even i never buy this theory of him being jealous of young player its just that he has no patience in anything other then his batting.

Barring any serious failures or major loss of form, Kohli should be captain till 2023 wc. If we don't win one of the three icc events, he should be replaced.

However bewda should be replaced ASAP if we fail to win the t20 wc

The problem is will Kohli be able to function under a coach with an actual voice.  Bewda and Rat need each other.

we will have another Chappell- Dada scenario. We already saw with Kumble and that will further mess the team up.

In 92 WC, Crowe had that cult figure like aura. When he was there (captaining or batting) you felt nothing could go wrong for his team. He appeared to be most popular with the commentators too.

Only Richards probably had such an aura before.  In 99 WC, Klusener gave glimpses of that feeling/aura where one man could make a difference.

What happened to so called Geniuses like Taylor and Martin Crowe in world cups. Taylor's Aussies lost to SL in 1996 finals and NZ was worse, they lost to Pakistan in 1992 semis.

Nothing wrong Kohli's captaincy just like above geniuses his team had couple of bad days.India is punching above weight with a totally one dimensional teams.

Feeling nostalgic about early 90s. Probably watched everything in the Ind-Aus-WI tri series, Ind-Aus test series, and of course the WC92. I don't recall if we ever had such a long engagement overseas .... In 1992 WC, many of us thought Aus would do well but it choked at home. SA was making its debut. But what NZ and Crowe did blew everyone away (unfortunately, the limelight was taken away by how Pak came back. And of course that infamous speech by Imran -> "In the twilight of my career, I have managed to win the WC." Then he went on about the cancer hospital. You could see look of surprise on many of the Pak players, whose celebrations in the final were comical to say the least). Below some nice points by Bhogle:

Why not get Mark Taylor as the coach? :hmmm: .... Ind can benefit by adapting his way of playing cricket .... maybe that can be used as a template for the type of cricket that India should play

PS Mark is w/ Cricket Australia:

Quote

Mark Anthony Taylor AO is a former Australian cricketer and currently a Cricket Australia director and Nine Network commentator.

96 WC Aus were not favorites. It was SA,Pak and Ind in that order. Still managed to win against most teams even in back to the wall situation against a inspired Nzl and a hopeless situation vs WI.

To some extent same goes for Crowe. Nzl was not a contender before the 92 wc but their out of the box approach and inspiring effort was what made the captain stand out.

Kohli has a team that is expected to cruise through these tournaments and lost vs Pak a team we are expected to beat 8 out of 10 times these days and to Nzl. There lies the difference.

To add to the above:

  • SL was playing at a different level in 1996. Losing to it is no big deal (no team could beat it)
  • Unfortunately, NZ were w/o Crowe in the SF. Crowe was out with a hamstring

Need to mention Ranatunga as well. He was a great captain too. The way he groomed players for roles, stood behind Murali, backed youngsters and had his own bag of tricks.

There have been quite a few good captains including Lloyd, who “intensified” the WI pace attack .... But since 90s, Crowe and Taylor stand out for me
