It's looks like there shouldn't be a competition for the captain's favourite players spot.

Dhawan , Rohit should  walk in the team whenever they wants, hence Rahul is not made to open the innings.

Rahul is forced to keep wickets and bat in the middle order inspite of having Pant and Pandey in the squad.

Shardul is preferred over Saini inspite of Saini proving he is better bowler than Shardul.

In the 3rd odi ,Rahul should open the inning and Pant should be the wicket keeper and middle order batsman.

From the squad selected , if the team management select the proper team , half the problems will be solved

KL Rahul

Prithvi Shaw

Virat Kohli

Shreyas Iyer

Manish Pandey

Rishabh Pant

Kuldeep Yadav

Navdeep Saini

Md Shami

Yuzuvendra Chahal

Jasprit Bumrah

Actually don't forget we also have a slot at 6 currently held by kedar/manish/dube/etc. Given we are using a batsman as keeper, won't be surprised it goes back to one of our legendary player.

Well according to Brat, ODIs are irrelevant this year.. so BC why are you playing them and collecting match fees. Just say I dont want to play and make Rohit captain.

Its like saying I failed an exam but it doesnt matter because it was irrelevant. I mean what kind of nautanki statements are these??

If the openers can use the series to get settled for the tests, I do not mind them opening. No point in changing things in a dead rubber when it is important to keep them confident for tests  .... Bumrah-Shami can be rotated .... Pant should be in

If we want to chop and change in every game based on win/loss and overlook the big picture, we are all Kohlis at the end of the day

Just because Thakur got runs in a couple of matches, he is being marketed as a bowling all rounder. When players are new they are able to get away because oppositions dont put enough effort into working them out.

As soon as Thakur became a part of the "batting lineup", the analysts would have worked on his weak areas, cut his scoring shots and forced him to make a mistake.

Dead rubber 11

Openers continue as mentioned before

Pant/Gill (Kohli rested)

Iyer

KL (captain)

Gill/Pant

Jadeja (plays tests and Kuldeep has a niggle)

Thakur

Saini

Chahal

Shami (Bumrah-Shami rotation)

Rahul is being groomed as a No.5 batsman in ODIs.

His ability to hit big shots with utmost ease, against both pacers and spinners, makes him ideal for the role.

Rahul looks a much better No.5 batsman to me rather than an opener in ODIs.

As @zen said above, getting Shaw and Mayank ready as openers for tests and giving them more game time in NZ is not bad, as there are not enough practice matches.  But they must play the 3 day practice match too.

Dropping Pant and playing Jadhav ... playing Shardul for his so called batting ability and dropping Saini ... dropping Kuldeep at the earliest chance ... make no sense to me.

Gill is not in the ODI squad. Most likely TM will pick Manish in place of Jadhav and rest Bumrah .Pant's career is over for now.
