IPL20 Captaincy Watch

M1

CSK: Dhoni

  • Fitness: looked fitter post the COVID break
  • Captaincy: pretty good overall esp. considering the start by QdK
  • DRS: fail (but could be Pandya's effect)
  • Keeping: nothing to fault
  • Batting: came lower down the order than usual but remained unbeaten
  • Toss: Won. Correct decision to bowl first

Score: A .... Need to see how his batting form is

MI: Rohit

  • Fitness: no comments as the picture is worth a 1000 words
  • Captaincy: poor esp. the use of spinners with dew on and Rayudu playing freely
  • DRS: fail esp. with Vijay's LBW
  • Fielding: did not observe much but could have made a better attempt to take one of the catches while running back
  • Batting: fail
  • Toss: N/A

Score: F .... If he does not bat well (apart from 2-3 decent knocks), MI could be playing with 10 players + poor captain

PS I may not be watching every game so feel free to add your observations of other games!

M2

DC: Iyer

  • Fitness: nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: nothing stood out by the book stuff but had to adjust for Ashwin's overs
  • DRS: did not observe
  • Keeping/fielding: Dropped Agarwal's catch so helped K11 tie the game (captains are judged at a higher standard)
  • Batting: Pass. Helped DC recover
  • Toss: N/A

Score: B+ .... lost points for dropping a catch at crucial juncture (higher standards for captains as Steve Waugh would say "you dropped the ...., son") but gained points for batting well in crisis

K11: KL

  • Fitness: nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: nothing stood out by the book stuff
  • DRS: did not observe
  • Keeping/fielding: did his job
  • Batting: Fail .... twice including in superover
  • Toss: Won. Elected to field

Score: F  .... loses big points for not only a) failing with the bat twice, but also b) horrendous decision of not opening with Agarwal, the man in form, in superover - effectively costing K11 the game

Without knowing what conversations took place between Argawal and KLR prior to the super over I don't think you can necessarily knock him for that.  I'm sure he asked Argawal if he was up to it, but maybe the guy was flat wore out after batting the entire innings?  KLR may not have had that option available to him.

match 1:

One thing i liked about MS is he used the matchup strategy mi has used so successfully for last years against MI itself. He didn't go with instinct or captain should lead from the front theory. Instead he sent lefty vs SLA and saved himself from bumrah . Bumrah always gets the better of him.

I believe against SRH he will come out earlier and destroy the knuckleball merchants since they somehow lose the plot against MS.

Good to see this calculation and not just instincts.

Many people called it instincts and genius captaincy but i call it matchup based play.

If sam does well MS will turn him into albie 2.0

MI were extremely rusty. Hopefully i am wrong but they looked lost already because of that even year / uae factor.

Match 2 was rookie error from kl which shreyas didn't .

keeping the pressure on and bowling your wicket takers even after powerplay. KL bowled gowtham in 7th releasing pressure but Shreyas bowled Rabada.

Long shot but shreyas should be in contention to leading us in 2023. Koach is  in whiteball and Rohit does not look serious about fitness.

Also the super over mess but it was KL's first match.

M3 (only watched the game live in patches so ....)

RCB: Kohli

  • Fitness: nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: Moeen was left out on such a surface
  • DRS: fail per @Sir Alex Ferguson
  • Keeping/fielding: did see 1 misfield but took a catch under pressure
  • Batting: Fail .... in fact could have stalled the momentum
  • Toss: N/A

Score: C-

SRH: Warner

  • Fitness: nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: nothing stood out from what I watched
  • DRS: did not observe
  • Keeping/fielding: did not observe
  • Batting: Fail
  • Toss: Won. Elected to field

Score: C

Nothing really stood out apart from some individual performances and comedy of errors made the game somewhat watchable. Both teams will need to work on their playing 11s

You can’t call batting fail given the circumstances he was runout

M4 (watched the game in patches)

RR: Smith

  • Fitness: Nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: Mostly by the book stuff
  • DRS: Fail .... iirc (There was an lbw when Smith was at the other end but at that point, he probably needed to use it)
  • Keeping/fielding: Pass
  • Batting: Pass .... Memorable knock so bonus points
  • Toss: N/A

Score: A .... Fantastic batting and not pushed hard when marshalling the troops on the field

CSK: Dhoni

  • Fitness: Nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: By the book stuff but had no answers when RR was on fire
  • DRS: Fail .... Jadeja to Smith?
  • Keeping/fielding: Did his job
  • Batting: Fail .... A lack of urgency with RRR rising so will lose additional points
  • Toss: Won. Elected to field

Score: D .... Caught on the back foot in the field and lacked urgency with the bat. Wicketkeeping effort avoided an F

M6 (Early result out)

K11: KL

  • Fitness: Nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: Mostly by the book stuff. But could have continued to attack with pacers who were picking up wkts
  • DRS: Did not observe
  • Batting: Pass .... hit a 100
  • Toss: N/A

Score: A .... Esp. for batting .... The highest score a captain can get is A+ for which one has to show great/innovative/proactive captaincy on field and spot on team selection, along with good batting/bowling and fielding performance

RCB: Kohli

  • Fitness: Nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: No Moeen & Morris (PS per @rkt.india Morris is injured)
  • DRS: Did not observe
  • Keeping/fielding: 2 drops, allowing KL to get a 100
  • Batting: Fail .... Appeared mentally out of it - started walking as soon as he hit the ball in air
  • Toss: Won. Elected to field

Score: F .... I do not recall a worst day for Kohli where he failed so comprehensively .... Unfortunately, there is no lower score than F

M7

DC: Iyer

  • Fitness: Nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: Tried new things including sending Pant at 3 (to keep L-R combination) and opening the bowling with a spinner (Axar)
  • DRS: Did not observe
  • Keeping/Fielding: Did his job
  • Batting: Fail .... Slowed the scoring rate. Stonis and Hetmeyer batted below him
  • Toss: N/A

Score: B+ .... For attempting to do new things

CSK: Dhoni (Captain Dew)

  • Fitness: Nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: Continued to open with Vijay-Watson. Gambled too much on dew. Jadeja promoted over Curran, who was in hitting batting form .... PS per @rkt.india Rayudu is injured
  • DRS: Did not observe
  • Keeping/Fielding: Did his job but missed out on appealing for a caught behind of Shaw
  • Batting: Fail
  • Toss: Won. Elected to field

Score: F .... It was either D or F but with CSK needing a boundary of every ball, failed to get going
