When Morgan dropped himself in a decider game to give Dawid malan a chance

England limited overs captain Eoin Morgan insisted he did the right thing for the team's "development" by dropping himself for the third Twenty20 international against South Africa at Cardiff on Sunday.

Morgan wanted to give another opportunity to middle-order batsman Liam Livingstone who made 16 on debut in England's three-run defeat at Taunton on Friday, a result that saw South Africa level the series at 1-1.

 

During the course of Malan's 44-ball knock, featuring 12 fours and two sixes, Morgan -- watching from the boundary at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens -- told Sky Sports: "He looks very relaxed.

"He's been around a long time and scored a lot of runs at Middlesex in all three forms.

"We've given him an opportunity today and part and parcel of him developing is taking that opportunity," added Morgan, who at 30 is only a year older than Malan

Livingstone, however, fell for a golden duck clean bowled by paceman Dane Paterson as he attempted an extravagant ramp shot.

From 166 for three, England lost five wickets for 14 runs -- a slide that Morgan, a veteran of 69 Twenty20 internationals -- might have done something to stop if he'd been playing in this match.

Earlier, Morgan explained the decision to drop himself by saying: "We recognise the series as a big opportunity to have a look at a younger group of players.

"If it was a case where I could go on and captain, I would. But this is an important part of our development for this series."

Former Ireland international Morgan added: "It’s a very difficult situation to be in. I love playing international cricket, but unfortunately that is the case today."

He insisted: "We remain very confident we can win the game with the team we have and put on a real entertaining show.

"It’s tough, but it’s a call you have to make looking to the long-term. It’s down to the quality of players that we have.

"It is a big call. But we haven’t been shy of making big calls in the past."

I rate Morgan way more than Dhoni even if the achievements aren't equal. His process is much clear than the jharkandi babua.

A selfless guy who never thought of padding stats by ganging up with other members

Never misses an opportunity to back newcomers,knows very well he won't be young and strong forever and their needs to be a pool of players who can play his role in the team

England have atleast 2-3 players available for each place,for me he is England's most important player ,then too he drops himself to back a youngster

On the other hand in the name of captain we have Joke of a Kaptaan ably supported by a Bevda who has no clue how to handle youngsters plays musical chair for certain places , doesn't allows newcomers to settle , shameless Kaptaan should atleast have a look on Morgan's achievements as Captain and what he does to achieve it

Both are polar opposite, England were literally minnows in LOIs Morgan played his hand too to carry them where they are today

Kohli has to introspect what he has achieved as an loi captain,has he made any progress,what he has done for the side?Did he really help his side to progress?

Such a selfless player and singly responsible for the rise of English cricket in LOIs. Imagine if England were lead by someone like Lolli... Roy would have been dropped because  he's irresponsible. Root would be dropped because he's slow and lacks grace. Bairstow would be dropped because he's inconsistent and Stokes would be dropped because he's bits and pieces.

that shud make one more insecure knowing his position can be taken, A top batsman can drop himself easily knowing easily his position cant be threatned

When the idea is to make team better individuals dont matter....its a 11 men sport and everyone shud be focused on team development not individuals

That WI tour jeez. One of the most embarassing moments for me was when Kohli celebrated his useless 100s in that inconsequential series post WC. That just highlighted his WC semis failure even more. Choker sala

That was when I stopped supporting Kohli. Only reason for him to be on the LOI leg of tour was his insecurities due to Rohit's 5 100s and IPL trophy win before the WC. His laughable excuse was the players' morale was down, he needed to be with them which later became he wants to build a new team for 2023 WC. And then he played the same top 3 in all the LOIs plus had Kedar in top 6!

Actually it isn't easy to do . No Captain wants to see another player captaining his side , much easier to drop someone else and say i am the captain and I should captain the team ...Not dropping yourself because runs  are more important than the team evolution is a whole different story .

AND he doesn't even play for his own country. Lol he does all this for England. Imagine what he would have done for Ireland.
