gakgupta Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Most of the ICFer's believe (including me) that he is not permanent... Obviously, he can cement the place by scoring lots of runs which I doubt because of his limited talent... India badly need an batting all-rounder in test matches and he can do that by improving his bowling skills His bowling is pretty decent and if he can put more efforts...he can be a decent spinner tweaker 1
Vk1 Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 He can become a crucial guy if he performs in this series. He will get continous opportunities now that H Pandya is gone
Gollum Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Score 300-350 runs in this series with at least one clutch knock....break a few partnerships with the ball, then have a monster series against Eng at home.
Adamant Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Needs to score a hundred in this series and that too in the business part of this series. That's the only way to make no. 6 his own
Ankit_sharma03 Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Vihari needs to score consistency and bowl, he is the kind of player who ll always be kept on edge and will be scapegoat at a drop of hat
sandeep Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 his part-time filler overs aren't going to help him. He's selected as a batsman for the team. Only way to stick around is contribute big runs. Indian batsmen can't hang around for long unless they put up centuries. That's just the way it is. And ought to be.
zen Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Reminds me how 26 Ranji teams can dilute the quality to pump up FC averages .... For FC avgs to be meaningful (improve competitiveness), Ranji teams can be reduced to 8 if not less express bowling and sandeep 1 1
Gollum Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Vihari damn unlucky to play just one test in India, that too in a position where team needed quick runs. And sent in as opener in Aus 2018-19. Even if he doesn't do great in this series I want him to play all 4 tests at home against England. Pretty sure he will outperform Rahane in Indian conditions and his offies will be handy as well.

Zones can be redefined too, to make each zone strong. Have a state level pre-zonal competition to choose the final zonal teams and give chances to all the state level players.

Yeah, that can help to improve competitiveness (and players) .... Maybe even allocate a couple of slots for international players in the 11 if it helps (would like to see likes of Rashid Khan in Ind FC for e.g.) Right now, I only consider FC/List A for players that I have not seen to get a rough idea. Once I see a player his FC/List A usually goes out of the window. Then it becomes about how the player handles bounce, swing (most struggle here), spin, etc express bowling 1

Very good player of spin bowling... Uses his feet well like Mayank does. I agree if he does well in Australia he should be permanent in the XI vs England.

So india plays with 5 bowlers ( 3 spinners or 3 pacers depending on pitch) and no 7 and 8 is always jadeja ashwin. Top 6 is a wk ( saha or pant) plus Rohit Mayank Pujara Kohli Rahane. How on earth can he get into the team..
Bhoot Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 (edited) Vihari is just another journeyman batsman. He has good fc avg but its ultimately useless. He doesn't have the IT factor. He can't win matches for us or even save. His ceiling is 28 runs from 72 balls innings. Say thank you and move on. Edited December 13, 2020 by Bhoot

Think it through and revisit your words. Btw, its not a question of "FC Average", for batsmen to make it to the national team, they have to score big runs in Ranji Playoffs, Irani game - etc. Viharis has done that.

Let’s not get stuck on 1.3B (quality cricketers are a handful) .... Maybe create a premier test league by combining 3-4 Ranji teams .... Quality over quantity

The idea should be to raise the quality of the weaker teams to raise the overall standard not the other way around. As guys like Natarajan have proven now or Samad has shown glimpses or in the past Dhoni etc have proven, there is talent is the most remote parts of the country. It works for Aus or Nzl because the cricket playing talent is relatively limited. In India you cannot do that, however with BcCI and all the resources at disposal they can raise the quality of the weaker teams and that’s what has been happening. Not only has Indian cricket standards constantly gone up and we are getting talent from some new untouched areas but also the lifestyles of a lot of domestic cricketers have gone up to and provided them with a steady income. Sorry but Your thinking seems very short term when Indian cricket has been actually expanding its talent pool. sandeep 1
maniac Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Guys like Pant and Pandya in tests if they bring other dimensions of the game like Pandya bowling or Pant improving his keeping standards (which are decent to begin with) May become essential in tests. If they don’t bring in other utilities they waste a spot. We get carried away by T20 performances and flashiness for tests. Players like Vihari or even Rahane and Pujara have a place in test cricket. A guy who can grind all day, play to his strengths is worth as much in tests as a power hitter in LOI’s. Vihari has done nothing wrong to be dropped. In fact has picked some important wickets at times too. Just because someone is not flashy doesn’t make him a poor player. He has earned his stripes by scoring tons of runs in domestics, A tours and has done reasonably ok in his limited opportunities. Yes, he needs a standout innings that will take him to the next level but even middle of the road performances are not enough as India has a batting factory of talented bats.

Maybe create a premier test league by combining 3-4 Ranji teams .... Quality over quantity Tiering accomplishes exactly that, while allowing for 'newer' regions to still have competitive access. Saurasthra used to languish in plate divisions, but with players like Pujara, Jaddu was able to contest the Ranji Finals. Gujarat often was in the same boat, but won it under Parthiv's captaincy. The greenbros across the border are "consolidating" their FC structure into 6 teams based on that theory, and Imran Khan's childish obsession with copying Australian FC cricket. And all it does, is limit opportunities for good players, and earning opportunities for fringe players. Champion teams are made from competitive FC structures - that is no doubt true. Everybody loves to pay homage to the "Champion" Aussie side of late 90s and early 2000s, but few realize the simple truth that the Australian FC cricketers were among the best paid FC cricketers on the planet, maybe bit less than county, where they had easy access to "top up" their earnings in their off season. Well compensated, well organized FC structures polish available talent. And India's talent base and FC structure has strengthened massively in the last decade. And the quality increase is directly a result of 'spreading the wealth'. When you have Ranji "regulars" making incomes comparable to White-collar mid-rung employees, that is attracting a lot of talent and competition on its own. The "Structure" as it exists is just fine, there is zero need to tinker with it and reduce the # of teams. If there is not enough high-quality competition, that can be addressed by fine-tuning the tiering.
sandeep Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 (edited) 3 minutes ago, zen said: The idea is to raise the standard of FC cricket "as a whole" by making the key FC tourney more competitive You don't make the Ranji finals by 'beating up' plate level teams. Ultimately, you have to beat the Mumbai, Delhi, Karnataka, TNs of the Ranji world. But you want the Gujarat, Goa, Saurasthras, Vidarbha, even Railways, to have their outside shot to make it to the top. That keeps the top teams from getting complacent and allows for talents like Dhoni, Jadeja, Pujara to emerge. I think you are simply not up to speed on the tiering structure of Indian FC cricket.
