Hanuma Vihari has 4 innings to save or cement his career

As per reports filtering in Rohit will open with Gill. That basically means one thing. Hanuma Vihari gets guaranteed 4 chances to either cement his career or blow it in next 2 tests. This is because even if Rohit flops he ll still open in Brisbane and same goes for Gill. With Rahul gone Hanuma Vihari virtually has no one to compete against in middle order as Prithvi Shaw and Mayank are both openers ( they wont be tried in middle order anyways). So 4 chances for him as when Kohli Rahul comes back and Rohit available in team it will be difficult for Vihari even to break into the squad of 15 for England series if he flops..good luck to him!

As a player you cannot ask for more.

Vihari > KL in the test team.

It'd be extremely unfair to Vihari if he isn't given a full season at home.

Problem is in last 7 test innings albeit away from home his average is measly. Now if he flops in 4 more innings that will be 11 innings without anything substantial.. how can selectors  ignore that..

some players will get long run and some will always be on edge and vihari is the latter case. Feel sad for him as he mostly had to play overseas and ur stats will not look good if u play only in away condition

But that's where we need our players to step up.

Even Jayant Yadav can score in home conditions, what's the use of picking a specialist batsman when he can't do well away from home.

Also he is not young, so we can't hope that he will improve much, he got a long rope and now this test itself should be his last chance.

Try Shaw in the middle order or even IYER, he won't do worse than Vihari.

No Vihari isn't better than Rahul.

Both of them have struggled away from home but atleast with KL we know that his ceiling is much higher if he is mentally prepared.

One thing they have identified for sure is Vihari's technique is good.  If he does well in last 2 games he may get a chance in home season as well.

These two tests are probably crucial for Pujara as well.

Rahane's ton at MCG has changed the dynamics a bit.  It's Vihari vs Pujara now.  I don't think Pujara is gonna make it to England this year.

He's 27 atm..  That's not old by any stretch.  He is just about entering the Prime age of a batsman.   They are giving 34 year old Rohit Chances after chances as if there is a decade of cricket left in him.

Bhai Rohit is getting chances bcoz of his reputation as odi player (which is wrong).

I am not sure if Vihari actually has the talent to become a 40+ averaging bat sman in test.

The amount of chances should be proportional to talent . Not everyone should get the same amount of chances.

I agree with this part.

Actually i think the only place where a player like Vihari can be utilised is no. 3

He doesn't have the strokeplay to bat at 6.

With some hard work there's no reason why he can't emulate Pujara. Also he is 27 so perfect age for a batsman.

Vihari can do everything or nothing yet he won't make it to first XI if everyone is fit.

Its quite clear that India will now go with five bowling options everywhere. Jadeja is a must at home and overseas, it will be between Pandya and Jadeja.

This also means that India will always go with five batting options and they are Kohli, Rahane, Rohit, Pujara and the fifth name has to be Gill.

All said and done, it is quite clear that in the first XI, there is no place for Vihari, KL, Mayank and Shaw until one or two of Pujara, Rahane or Rohit gets phased out.
