Panchal vs Easwaran who looks better for 3rd opener

Come england series 3rd opener can be a problem and more so if one among gill or rohit looses form or gets injured. Mayank n shaw with their current flaws wud be anderson's delight. So among next 2 who looks better

My observation

 

About Panchal

 

• Has more strokes then easwaran
• Plays far away from the body at time and doesnt commit fully on front foot 
• he has a bit of karun nair n Mayank in him 
• plays pace bounce better then easwaran 

 

About Easwaran

 

• Looks more tight then Panchal 
• Bouncers can be an issue 
• Looks more of a grinder then free flowing 
• Plays well within his limitation

 

 

So ill prefer Easwaran for england and had it been Aus i would have Preferred Panchal

Now I think Easwaran has been selected as a reserve player as well for Eng series.  So clearly selectors are looking at him for future.  

Mayank Tbf deserves chances.. I reckon he is the best HTB we got even better than Rohit.

Easwaran is already added as reserve player for this series against England so obviously selectors' pick is Easwaran. Too many options India have- Shaw, Agrawal and now Easwaran. Panchal unfortunately wont find a place in Indian team. Gill-Rohit will continue to open for India in foreseeable future.

Easwaran ... panchal will have similar issue to Shaw ... I can easily see Anderson inswinger castling him ... need to have a tight defense ... and ability to play pull against archer ... kinda sucks that team india is not trying out one of the two against archer this series ...

Mayank will continue to be the reserve opener. Enough time for him to workout the technical issues in his batting. Plus with the Ashwin+Jadeja+ 3 pacers theory, they will most likely keep Vihari as a reserve opener as well.

 

On Panchal and Easwaran, both of them after a great couple of seasons, lost their FC form last season. Panchal did however score a 100 vs NZ A in NZ. Both are equally good with slight deficiencies. Easwaran is more in Jaffer mould - tall, lanky, stylish run accumulator, good on the front foot but suspect on cuts and pulls. Panchal is more of the aggressor and 

 

Should we also add Abhinav Mukund to the mix? Yes he is 31 but he has been among the runs across formats for the last 2-3 seasons and has played in Eng before. Was strangely discarded after a 81 in Sri Lanka, his last test innings.

3rd opener is Mayank for now.. Nothing changes until he fails miserably 

 

For future options -

other than Eswaran and Panchal, how is Ruturaj Gaikwad? He seems to have a much better List A record than First class though

Has looked better on the A tours against higher quality of bowling, both in West Indies and NZ. 

There is this game in West Indies where India A were struggling all over the place with Mayank, Vihari, Easwaran all falling for low scores and Panchal built a great partnership with Dubey to pull us out. Go to around the 3 minute mark for the start of the Indian innings. 

 

 

There is a longer ball by ball version, would look out for that and add it if I do find it....showed a lot of grit in that innings did Panchal against the moving ball. Was really impressed with his temperament in that innings.

And seems to drive well on front foot. There will be  many balls bowled full to extract swing , if you can get runs vs such balls , its good option . Bowlers will have to change their length a bit . But we will face 2 masters under English conditions who also have the ability to get bounce when they want to negate batsmen coming out of the crease .

A tough tour for most of the openers if it aids swing. Me too opt for Eashwaran , only concern not done much recently .

Paddikal has more potential than all but he has been poor in ranji. Any chance he can improve?

Easwaran looks much better

 

....  Reasonably good footwork  ... looks decent both on the front foot and off the back foot 

....  His shots have punch  ... he gets the ball to the boundary even without too much bat swing

.... Did not see him reaching out to wide deliveries ... and that is good for all conditions and especially for England.

.... Drives, cuts, pulls, flicks ... everything is there 

.... Plays spinners well

 

 

The main thing I want to know is .... how he is against high pace.

Panchal is better than Easwaran as he has better defence and plays spin superbly.Both have limited ability to play ball late - prerequisite for any good test opener.Easwaran often plays the flick shot in air as he cant play it when ball is very close to pads apart of edging even on flatest of pitches.Panchal might be as good as Mayank.
