I think you are reviewing Lagaan from 2021 Pov. For the time it came out, it was a pathbreaking movie. If you look at beloved films especially from the 90’s which most people here have grown up with they don’t age that well. For example if you look at Andaz Apna Apna from a cinematic standpoint it was a terrible film. You have a long haired slim salman in one scene and bodybuilder short haired Salman in the very next scene followed by slim salman with short hair in the next. Apart from Paresh Rawal and the supporting cast the main actors bar Amir Khan were terrible. They all look like they are acting in a school play. Bonus points for Ravishing Raveena’s looks in the movie though. There is no script, story or logic. Everything is thrown into gather. However still a classic and can rewatch it again. Similarly Lagan has a lot of usual tropes and cliches but the music,the choreography, the way the whole cricket angle is tied in, actual British actors instead of Tom Alter/Bob Christo putting in excellent performances, some unknown theatre artists or upcoming character artists, the lyrics and even the sports choreography make it a path breaking movie. The hero and most of the cast were dressed up like a simple village simpleton and not designer wear. They captured the essence of that time beautifully. Sure it was oscar bait. May be we are over saturated with all the content available now but for that time it was a revolutionary film. Edited February 2, 2021 by maniac

"It happened one night" is among my favorite so Chori Chori does not compare favorably (as one would inevitably draw a comparison) It was remade in the 90s, by MahaChor Mahesh Bhatt/AK - Dil hain Ke Maanta Nahin, was almost a scene-to-scene copy of Chori Chori and also added bits of 'It Happened One Night' (that above YT clip , RK didn't copy for it's time, but MB did it!) . One thing though when those guys used to copy they used to adapt them well to cater to Indian sensibilities. Ae Dil hai mushkil is a copy of a famous song as well and so many other songs and movies of that era. coffee_rules 1

Good film, I so wish some mature director like SRay or GuruDutt had directed it instead of a mainstream director like Vijay Anand, as some of the emotions don't match the novel (most of the times). But, it is a musical masterpiece songs composed by SDB are evergreen, esp the classical - 'Piya Tose Naina jaage re' , great singing by Lata and the dance by Waheeda Rehman is too good (I have to google who was the dance director - maybe Gopikrishna). I liked the picturization of 'Kaaton pe kheench ke ye aanchal'. Great lyrics and music. to Shailendra and SDB. I don't know how Dev Anand, a punjabi teamed up with a Bengali like the Burmans, and with a Kannada guy like Guru Dutt and made great movies in the 50s and 60s. The old gramophone that my dad had growing up was working okay till ~ 2014, but it was on its way out and not worth moving it to the US. My mom made me give it away to an antique store in BLR.
