Somehow I feel he was wrongly utilized in the national setup. His strongest suit was first-class cricket, where he admirably lead the Bengal attack. His high-points were surely the two Duleep Trophy campaigns for East Zone 2011/12 and 12/13 (ably supported by Basant Mohanty, another criminally underrated East Zone stalwart); the final of the 2011/12 Duleep Trophy is one of my favourite Indian first-class matches (along side Bengal vs Karnataka, Ranji Trophy Semi-final 2019/20) ...

 

Somehow, BCCI numbskulls decided he was best tried out in T20s first, which was possibly his weakest suit. Probably an artefact of the old days, when new players were tried out in T20s first, ODIs second, and finally Tests.

 

He also gave one of the -- for me -- iconic moments of IPL history: David Warner beaten for pace, the ball bursting between bat and pad and sending the off-stump cartwheeling (KKR vs DD, 7th Apr 2010).

The reason he was so underrated comes from the fact that he had a bad record in IPL and T20Is. Even in limited overs, he was at his best when bowling to attacking fields in the powerplay. In First Class, he was quite a handful. Moreover, his game was *not* built around merely exploiting helpful conditions (like a Tim Murtagh, say), he had decent pace and bounce, in addition to being able to make the ball talk in helpful conditions. In a different era (where conditions in limited overs matches are less skewed towards batsmen) or with better selectors (who do not by default make a bowler debut in T20Is and have them graduate to longer formats), he could very well have become a reliable Test bowler, with occasional horses-for-courses limited overs appearance on more balanced wickets.

Fully agree. Same thing was done to Siraj and he lost two valuable years. He could have been the bowler India could have played in NZ instead of Umesh Yadav. Dinda suffered same fate. His average is outstanding. Should have easily been a reserve pace bowler for tests.

For some reason I confused dinda for Vinay kumar. My bad. Dinda was impressive in first class. So unfortunate to not get a chance.

You never know, May be played the wrong format. People were clubbing Siraj or even Umesh Yadav with Dinda etc because of the trashing they get in LOI’s. Happy retirement to him

he came at a time when if i remember bowlers like him were tearing it up in domestic cricket because of all the calls for green pitches at home everytime we failed abroad. it meant even vinay kumar became a domestic cricket legend and guys like r dhawan were knocking on the doors of international selection.

An outstanding test bowler who could have been the next Stuart Broad of his era but ended up becoming Ashok Dinda.
