South Africa is the Zimbabwe of the 90’s

Few international class players, capable of springing the odd upset but looks like they have gone down the drain. The support players are minnow level. The colored cricketers are mediocre but just like Zimbabwe some of them seem to be marginally better than the newer white cricketers.

The scariest team from my childhood or youth is now a minnow.

Not good for cricket, considering there are only a few countries that are good at the international level.

Perfectly put. I also got this feeling watching them in their current series. Not a single good player. Are things so bad in RSA?

The overall feeling is quite different. Zim then felt like they tried their best and gave a surprise once in a while. In case of SA, it's hammer on foot. Proper incompetence first off the field & then on it.

Don’t they have Greame Smith and Boucher in their management? Shows that you need admins to run the show and not great cricketers.

I remember Ali Bacher used to run the show in the 90’s when SA was not only a force but they were also very innovative like 3rd umpire and other new innovations or the way they used to organize tournaments and series.

I recently saw a documentary about white slums in SA. It was surreal as the filmmaker was a rich black guy from UK and he was interviewing these really poor, homeless and  jobless white  people living in pathetic conditions. Even he said it’s weird how a black privileged man was in the middle of these white slums while in the rest of the world it is opposite.

May be it’s the state of their society that’s reflecting on their cricket. Cricket is a predominantly white sport.

Decline of South African cricket is more due to political reasons. Cricket and rugby were traditionally followed by the white demographics of South Africa, especially cricket which had a largely white audience. Football on the other hand is most popular among the native South Africans.

With the decline in stature of the white demographic in South Africa and most talented white South African cricketers signing up for domestic cricket in UK and Australia, it is no wonder why cricket is declining in South Africa.

If you watch the rebel tours to South Africa in 80s, you will find fully white spectators, not a single native South African there. Cannot ignore the role of demographics here in decline of the sport.

90s Zim team won a test series in Pakistan against a much more talented Pak team. Not a single batsman in this team is as good as Andy flower though bowlers are better. They need Rabada back in form and kick faf out

Also tons of white folks are already moving to places like Aus & NZ..  NZ is believed to most leniant & giving free ride to immigrants especially if they got any sporting credentials..  Glenn Phillips & Conway are latest additions & add to that NZ will continue to have a gun rugby team as well.

Only a miracle can bring SAF cricket back to its past glory.

Despite the fact that it’s sad to see what is happening to these poor-middle class White folk in SA they still definitely have an advantage over the rest of the world, as they can easily move to these developed nations with much  less hassle than ethnic immigrants from Asia and Africa.
